Default smtp mail forwarding

Currently our mail is stored in pop3 mail boxes that we access via the online web client. We are going to install a windows 2003 server running exchange and I want to forward all mail on our domain to this server.

I do have control panel access for the domain but I am not sure which dns fields I need to amend as its been a long time since I last did this.

Can someone please help on this. Thanks in advance

You can forward the emails using the forwarding/redirection option in the control panel.

You can have the MX entries in the DNS records edited such that the emails are forwarded to the Exchange server in case the mail server goes down.

Thanks for your reply.

I have noticed the redirect field but I want to remove all pop3 mail boxes and direct all mail to our in house exchange server.

I have a router configured with a static ip address so want to point all mail for our domain directly to this ip (I understand this relates to the MX record).

Under the control panel, if I go into mail, then preferences I see that I can select "Redirect to external mail server with IP Address". I presume that I can enter the IP address of our router here and use NAT to route the smtp mail to our server.

Is this all I need to do or do I need to change further parameters anywhere else within the control panel?

Comment welcome, and thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,

Yes, you can try that as it too would work.. But I've a slight better idea on this. What you can do is just change the MX records of your domains to point to the router's IP address & configure the router in such a way that any oncoming request on port 25 will be automatically forwarded to your MS-Exchange server's IP address..

One more thing, make sure you turn off the mail services for this domains from the Plesk control panel, else any emails generating from this server would be delivered locally [MailEnable] rather than remotely [MS-Exchange]
