Default spam assasin - configuring the subject line

Hi,

I'm trying to configure SpamAssassin to give me a more informative subject line. I've set the 'required_score' to 10.0 as it is going to be used on many domains so I don't want it to be overly aggressive, and I've changed the 'rewrite_header subject' to

### Spam (_HITS_ of _REQD_) ###

However when a spam message is detected it is just tagging it with '*spam*'.

What do I need to do to change it so it tags it as above?

Thanks

Paul

We have our customized spam protection script on our linux servers which overrides spamassassin settings. It wont be possible for you to setup customized tagging for spam emails as our scripts is perfect and it deleted genuine spams with close to 95% perfection.

Hi,

Ok - this is a BIG problem for us. There is no way our customers will accept the spam e-mails being deleted automatically (even at 100% accuracy, it only takes one important e-mail to not get through). I was originally told that spam assasin was configurable and that the messages would not be deleted automatically.

This would be a show stopper for us and would mean we could not use eUKhosts for hosting.

Hopefully this is not the case....

Regards

Paul

Please open a ticket through our helpdesk and let me know the ticket number. I will ask our CRO to remove your account from the list.

He will figure out something to make this work for you. I am not sure why you wont trust our configuration as all our customers are happy with the spam free email service and we have same thing on our mail server. I was deleting close to 300 spams per day before 1 year but now I don't get more than 2 - 3 spams and I've never lost any genuine emails.

Hi,

Tech Support have changed my account so I can configure Spam Assassin myself.

Should I be editting my user_prefs file in the spamassassin folder

and copying all the options from here into it,

http:// spamassassin.apache.org/tests_3_1_x.html

I am trying to configure it so it allows though all spam messages but with a score in the subject line so the users can decide what level of score to keep versus trash. I've added ### Spam (_HITS_ of _REQD_) ### to rewrite_header subject in the Cpanel configuration options for Spam Assassin.

However when I forwarded a test spam message it bounced back to me rather than got flagged.

This is the error,

<spamtest@gragnola.com>: host gragnola.com[87.117.201.114] said: 550 Spam score
too high (17.5) (in reply to end of DATA command)

Also on the Cpanel configuration page for Spam Assassin you can elect to have all spam messages deleted, if you select this how do you remove it at a later date if you would rather allow them through.

If I make all these configurations under my main account, will they also exist under and other accounts I create within the WHM, or should I copy my final user_prefs file to all other accounts.

Can you point me in the right direction...

Thanks

Paul

Is this customised spam protection set up by default? I've just had an account transferred from another host to your vc10 server this weekend, and i had 12 spams through today. I have antispam software on my PC, which picked up all of them, so i'm not particularly worried about it, but i'm just curious...

regards,

Chris

Yes. We have our custom spam protection script on vc10 as well. Now we add it by default on each new server we setup. Also spf records have been added in DNS template.

This 2 features have helped us a lot to reduce incoming spams so we cannot disable them for any reason.

Could you check that its set up on my account - pratt.me.uk. My account was transferred in to your server, rather than set up from scratch, so its possible that this feature is not configured on my account.

Unless of course your script is server wide regardless. I just would have thought it would have picked up some of these spams... some of them are a bit obvious!

I have checked your account and I dont see any reason why you should get more spams. If you get more than 10 spams again tomorrow then let me know as that may need some verification from our system admins.

Spam assassin is now switched on, but still getting lots of spam messages through. Mark implied earlier in this thread that EUKhost's customised scripts override spam assassin anyway.

I have posted some example spam email headers on the helpdesk.

Thanks for your help.

Let me know once you get an update from the support team. If same volume of spam continues then I'll have to assign someone to go through each incoming spam on weekend and make necessary changes in spamassassin rules.

Thanks for the help. I'm still getting spam though, but I think i'ld rather configure the spam assassin and the appropriate email filters within my own Cpanel, such that I remain in control of what email is classed as spam, and whether it is deleted or not.

Of course, any top tips for configuring spam assassin and the email filters will be gratefully received, as it's all new to me!

I've been having a play around with the settings for spam assassin. Are there clever ways of setting up spam filters, other than just say delete/reroute everything spam assassin thinks is spam, determined by the spam score setting in spam assassin?
