Angry Website Compatibility = No!

Calling all developers and Admins...

Started working (finally) on getting one of my actual websites up and running. Since I joined EUK I noticed some things just weren't quite right but I lived with it, like you do. But now that's come to bite me.

Like I said, I started to work on some actual content on one of my sites and it simply will not allow me to add content. I've been working away for months to find the right "look" for the site, now as soon as I try to write anything to it *bang* I'm crashed out to the front page of the domain (not the front page of the site, but of the domain!)

I thought this was a Joomla! thing at first, to do with the new stable release. No. Quickly threw up a Joomla! site using Fantastico to be sure it wasn't the install process as far as my intervention (fantastico still installs the old version) and it does precisely the same thing.

So I know Joomla! itself works, I've been using the technology (Mambo & Joomla) for 5 years now! I know the website works, a ported site from my old host works perfectly well - until you try to add new content! So then I start to wonder if EUK is to blame?

I go through fantastico at random, install a couple of sites and then try to add content. Joomla! isn't the only one that this happens with.

Has anyone else got this, or is it unique to me? Can anyone light a candle in the dark?

Mallie

Just to get ahead of things,

Everytime you try and add new content to your website, it crashes?

looks like a modsecurity thing - bet you were trying to save some html code to the database.
see this post - (was going to put a link but can't find the post) with the syntax of how to turn it off in the admin folder by editing the .htaccess file.

Yep, it sounds like a mod_sec problem. It's pretty easy to disable; the following is a link to the thread which contains the code on how to disable mod_sec: mod_security Fix. Note: the thread has been stuck in the PHP hosting forum so if anyone ever needs it in the future, it's pretty easy to get to.

Bingo! That's exactly what was happening!

Tried and now in place... Guess what??? It works now! How utterly rubbish is that, I have to make my website more insecure to get it to work.... Oh well, at least it's working now! Another thing to note, most of the folders need to be CHModded to 777 to be able to upload new components and modules etc.

But still, it looks nice...

DavidAllen, Flesso.... Thank you so very much for your help!

Glad that you got your problem sorted out Mallie. Yes, unfortunately, to keep a website secure it loses a lot of its interactivity, interactivity that is used in a lot of CMSes and related scripts. Hopefully this will be able to be resolved in the future with the advent of new technology.

Just remember that with disabling mod_sec it does make your site less secure but as long as you rememeber to make regular local backups (which is supplemental to any backups eUKhost may be making) then you should face very few problems that can't be resolved.
