I am configuring our new VPS. I don't really need or want any help from cPanel on this. What is the "cleanest" way to disable it? I renamed the /usr/local/cpanel directory to something else and that seems to have stopped its services from starting but I am wondering if there is something more elegant than this.

best option is to uninstall cpanel control panel. just remaining cpanel directories wont help as cpanel has installed many addon softwares which should be uninstalled if you wish to configure your Linux vps from command line.
