Default AVG Free Edition

My computer thankfully detected no anti-virus protection on my computer. So I got around later that morning to installing AVG Free Edition. I started a scan and it got rid of 159+ viruses. I am really pleased with AVG Free Edition and I am glad I have installed the software on my computer. I haven't had anti-virus software on my computer so long because my dad only purchased McAfee Personal Firewall. Since this is installed I will be performing regular scans. I do recommend AVG Free Edition .

AVG is quite good, certainly better than norton and the liking. I dont use a AV, just use a good HOSTs file and watch what im doing. Havent been infected at all, apart from before I used the HOSTs file.

Have you got a HOSTs file installed in your system??

Avast do a free version too, which i think is pretty good. Although I think Internet Security is pretty important so I pay and use Kaspersky.

So should I consider that most of your previous posts were submitted by Viruses and Trojans ?

Unsure if that has happened before. However, all viruses that were originally on my computer has been removed and cleared.

I also find in useful to submit a Hijack this! log to a reputable tech forum for the experts to have a look over. THey always get the little nasties out that the scanners miss.

System Mechanics Pro 7 from iolo.com and housecall.trendmicro.com have been best resources for Windows so far. AVG is something that you can keep active on your computer to block any new viruses / trojans from reaching your OS but when you need something better to sort other problems as well then try 30 day trial version of System Mechanics Pro7. remember to uninstall it when it sorts all the problems on your machine as System Mechanics creates problems for Microsoft Outlook and MSN if you keep it active permanently.

I recently had to go into the shell because AVG was incapable of removing a virus/problem I had. But all in all AVG is normally very good.

Norton is a definite no-no - it gives you more problems than you had in the first place - it doesnt even uninstall properly when you realise its a pile of rubbish!!

Also add to that it loves to hog your system resources which slows down your PC greatly, especially if you have under 1GB of RAM.

I have 1GB of RAM and it still slows the system! (along with my firewall!)

Ideally you need a mix of virus programs, although not running in system at the same time. I've seen an article on the net where they deliberately infected a PC with a ridiculous amount of viruses, something like 2000. Not one virus program detected them all, with even the best missing a couple of hundred, and one of the big names, Mcafee or Norton I don't remember which, was one of the worst performers.

Other good free AV software:

I would never ever have 2 instances of a AV running at the same time. They are likely to cause conflict with each other.

I didn't mean to have them all running at the same time, which I did say in my original post, but to use them to do scans. I usually use AVG, but even if it finds nothing I've had one of the others find something.
