Toshiba drops out of HD DVD war
Toshiba has said it will stop making its high definition DVDs, ending a battle with rival format Blu-ray over which would be the industry standard.

Wow, that didn't take as long as the VHS / Betamax war. However I think its better for the consumer for this to be over and done with as fast as popular. Now you can go out and get a Blu Ray DVD player and discs without the fear that they will be made obselete so I'm happy!

Prior to Blu-ray winning it would be recommended to have got a 'combi' player, thus covering yourself againsts whichever won.

Good point - but these seem to be more expensive than sticking with just a Blu Ray player .

As in non-HD players or HD-DVD players?

I definitely think high definition is a lot better than standard definition and I definitely notice the difference when I am watching programs such as Hotel Babylon on BBC HD - the only downside is the amount of recording space it currently uses but I am sure as HD moves on so will our recorders / hard drives .
