Expiring Nominet registered UK Domain
A domain I bought with the .co.uk extension has just expired, Nominet must take me as being stupid or something, after having recieved postal notifications of experiation as well as email. Obviously when you hit the twilight period you have to pay in the region of £94.00 to renew it. What annoyed me this morning was I recieved an invoice for £94 saying if I wanted to renew the domain, send payment, if not don't reply. I had selected not to renew in my domain cp, so why do I keep recieving all this utter sh*t, do Nominet not understand all this?

if its only just expired, are you not able to renew it via your original registrar for the normal cost? You get a month or so grace I think.

Why they are charging too much cost for renewing though it is a .co.uk domain?

If you buy through Nominet you will always be charged a fortune. Buying through a registrar you can take advantage of their BULK sales agreement with Nominet as they buy thousands of names. To go independently to Nominet to buy just one name makes the cost prohibitive. There's probably a very creative breakdown of administrative costs and such. I've no idea why it should be quite so expensive.

As I understand it, Nominet requires any registrant wishing to surrender their domain (presumably this is equivalent to wishing not to renew) to complete a Surrender Form (see PDF here). Were you asked to complete this Josh?

I'm guessing he wasn't asked to complete a Surrender Form but personally - why bother?
If you don't want the domain - they cant charge you a penny and you dont have to do a single more bit of work to notify them of this intention (please correct me if I am wrong anybody).
Whats the worst they are going to do? - take the domain away from you (which is what you want!)

Exactly, why bother. Wait till the domain expires then re-new at the original price.

You should not use such words for Nominet just bcoz they charge high for direct registrations. Nominet is not any sort of Hosting company to sell domains for low cost to get more and more customers. They need to earn as they have huge setup to run and that too in UK. Its not just running office only but there are many other complicated things involved in their job.
If you wish to register domains directly from them for low cost then signup for their membership program and become a Tag Holder.

What annoys me is the lack of communication between the registrar and Nominet. I selected for the domain to be cancelled, and not to be renewed. I selected that, it didn't get renewed, which is good, yet I got that invoice...

This is just a tactic you will find used in business whichever it is. They will send you an invoice in the hope you renew and pay it and become one of their customers again.
If you just ignore it, you will lose your domain and everything will be fine - no more invoices, so if you dont want it just leave it and dont respond as they wont renew without payment!

Just stop complaining about them They do this to all expiring domains. I have recieved e-mails to renew. Just ignore then and they get the message.

Still, invoicing for something you have specifically asked not to be invoiced for seems to be poor practice!

Well if your registra forgot or had an error, it would be a god send
Other companies are underhand in domain registration this is nothing. An American firm checks when a domain is about to expire and will send a letter to the registrant trying to get a renewal through them. Meaning that the domain would be transferred from its current registra.

The best way is to ignore those notifications. Charge of £94 for renewal is probably inclusive of the additional charge they levy on you if you fail to renew a domain after the expiry date.

They dont charge any different fee for registration or renewal of expired domains. They have only 1 price for domain registrations and renewals.
