“Dead Zones" are the areas where nitrogen (and phosphorus) fertilizes found dissolved in water with relatively high quantity, which leads to much algae growth which absorbs much of oxygen from water due to which water is inhospitable to fish and other marine life.
Nitrogen coming from natural gas transmitted into ammonia fertilizer and used to grow crops. The Nitrogen which does not absorbed by plants runs off into streams, which flow into rivers & finally which flow to the ocean, where this excessive nitrogen leads to development of algae.
Only Jellyfish can survive in these conditions; corals certainly do not.
