Default PC on or off??

This is not really a security issue, I came across this discussion and I decided to share it with you guys. I really want to know what you think.

This is about whether turning your PC off or leaving it on 24hrs will wear its components. I don't know what to believe, so that is why I would like to hear what you guys have to say about this. So do you think it harms your PC when you leave it on 24 hrs a day or when you turn it on 5 or 10 times a day??

If its well cooled it should be fine. At todays prices though, you will have a high electricity bill.

Hello,

I think is neither good to keep it ON for 24hrs nor to have it shutdown and start 5-6 times a day as in both cases the life of the hardware will deem soon. There should be a routine time fixed to keep it ON or OFF.

And Yes,
I moved this thread here as it is no where near to security ...

Personally, I think what Martin has said is the best option. It is the best balance component life wise as well as money wise.

Too much in either direction isn't best for your computer .

Yeah, does make sense that your hardware eventually would ware out - especially in laptops! I use to keep my computer on 24/7 until I realised the nice electricity bill we got . Saved a few quid but again, that's worth every penny especially for UK costs .

Whichever the option, if you keep it on 24/7, ensure you're not using Windows! - As Windows hates being online for long periods (unless server edition).

My main PC is only on when I use it, its off the rest of the time. However, I have my Media Centre PC in sleep all the time so that it can wake itself up when needed, for example to record a program.

ANY windows edition which is not a server edition. So Vista is not suitable for remaining online 24/7.

I keep mine on during the day as it means I can access it if I'm out. It also does things with phone calls for me so having it on helps there. Outside of that though, I turn it off at night unless I'm running backups or something like that. Either way, I try for a restart every 24 hours to keep things running smoothly.

I leave my Vista Ultimate machine on 24/7. Reboot once every two weeks or so at the most. I keep mail programs running on it and use UltraVNC to access my files alot.
My PCLinuxOS 2007 hasnt been shut down in a month.

Goverment is the best at spending money
I cant turn AC off anyway, it averages 35C to 43C here all summer long. Throw in a 30 year old sweatbox building and you have problems!

Governments are normally generous with tax payers money. Have you not seen their recent expenses?

Like £20,000 per year for a second home with no mortgage. Or £8,000 a year in taxis?

Paying a few thousand on a electricity bill will be no worry to them - whether its the British or the US government!
