The reason for slow emails?

One for the 'odd box' which I came across this morning...

The gastropods have been fitted with equipment to allow them to send e-mails on behalf of visitors to a website hosting.

Instead of instantaneous communication, sent messages will travel at 0.03mph (0.05km/h) and could take days, weeks or even months to arrive.

Thanks for the link, btw while using few free email service, I found some time the email not get delivered and nor I get mail for "failed delivery message", then the question comes to the mind "where has actually my mail gone?
