Speech Recognition Technology
I've been playing around with speech recognition technology in Windows Vista. Although I’ve been trying to get it to type in to the web website hosting directly, it doesn’t seem to want to do it. However to show the improvement from XP to Vista, I’m typing this in word using a headset on vista. Although it’s making a few mistakes when I’m dictating, overall it’s not too bad and when I go back to change something I can do it all through speech recognition. It’s also a lot easier to select things as you can show numbers on different buttons and just say that number you require followed by OK. It makes it quite a been easier than XP and the tutorial vista is pretty helpful in showing you what to do. One amusing thing though, is that Vista is one of the hardest words to get right (for me anyway) so I have resorted to the tried and tested copy and paste method!!!
So, I just wondered if anyone else had played around with the speech recognition yet and watch their thoughts were?
P.S. I've now just got vista to type directly into the website hosting!!!

It is amusing thing. However for me it seems little difficult to get familiar with that interesting feature- Controling computer using voice and avoiding the use of keyboard.

If you have an accent or speak too fast, it may take extra training for you to be able to use this feature. I've never been particularly excited by the idea of controlling my PC with my voice but there's obvious appeal for users with disabilities.

It frustrates me a lot of the time. Yes it does make things a little faster and easier but being quite a confident typer I don't notice the difference in speed all that much. However it does seem to be very sensitive to different prenunciations of words and obviously nearly always can't tell the difference between this like there/their/they're.
I've also used it on my phone, with slightly more success and also tried to use it on a PC in a game but when it does something wrong or doesn't understand it a critical battle and I lose I kind of give up on it and go back to the trusty keyboard and mouse method!

Having wrestled with Dragon Voice some years ago, I really doubt I would ever venture back into PC based speech recognition again (I spent more days training it and even more time correcting the mistakes after that).
The voice recognition in my Nokia N95 is quite astonishing though (and no training needed). I haven't had an error yet. I decided to save my home phone number with the entry named 'Phone Home' and can speak the two words in an ET impersonation and the phone still recognises it.
Talking of voice recognition, the funniest has to be the episode of The Osbournes where Ozzy was trying to get the radio to work in his BMW (which happened to use voice commands). He got so frustrated with it and bellowed f*** off and it actually turned the radio off.
I suspect that the phone based voice recognition is ROM based, perhaps that is the future?

I use phone based recognition on my phone hands free when I am driving and it is very useful. But, as you have said, the computer just doesnt seem to be able to master it and I prefer using a keyboard because I can type quite fast anyway so there isn't a huge advantage for me - plus the fact correcting it is tiresome.
I didn't see that episode of the Osbournes! - wish I had have done - Ozzy is a legend!

You're right there David. Its kind of a shame that he sobered up. I doubt there will be any new series

I know that is definitely a pity. And with Sharon and X Factor, and Kelly and all her shows and Jack even breaking into TV its unlikely you'd see a lot of them even if a new series was commisioned - which is unlikely when most of the cast are away!

Is it just me or do none of them appear half as interesting when they were in the Osbournes series. Jack is as close to a human sedative as can be and Sharon still has the tinge of bored 'kids have left home now' housewife?
I like the X Factor, watch it religiously (I get likened to Simon Cowell a lot - say what I think before thinking about what to say, typing is different of-course).

I know what you mean. I still like Sharon quite a bit in X Factor - some of the comments and faces she manages to make.
And it was a classic when Simon Cowell sent out Louis and Sharon and Sharon nearly got knocked out by the door, and then Danni started smirking and got sent out anyway and then without letting the contestant sing again said he had already heard too much and said No and made her leave on just his vote!!
She is only seconded by Simon Cowells fantastic one liners! .

I need a speech recognition software in Romanian if possible, but as you described here there aren't very efficient softwares available. Are there professional ones available on the market because I couldn't find any.

Although I dont have great knowledge of speech recognition software I would imagine that there is some kind of speech recognition software available in your language but how good it is or how well developed it is is another matter.

I switched to Vista only for the speech recognition tool because it works much better than it did on XP. Analyzing other aspects I would have gladly kept my XP but unfortunately my job imposes a lot of typing and it is much easier for me to dictate it.

I think the next thing about Vista is the tablet PC cababilities. I'm looking at one at the minute which is great. I've had a tinker with one and it's amazing it recognises even my handwriting!

And a nice bug there appears to be in Vista. If you're using Narrator with Word, it won't actually read the text you've got in a document. It will tell you that you're looking at a document pane but it just returns everything as empty. The work around I've found is copy and paste in to notepad. (It's also not fixed in SP1).

Pretty nice feature, I think it is doable to send pen strokes to remote window server using vista with silverlight apps.
