Ubuntu seems to be the up and coming distro. I've been several hosts switching over to it - does it have some special new features or something?

Not in particular (that I have noticed anyway) but it runs extreamely smoothly and gets every last drop out of your system hardware - the speed it runs at really amazed me - even if you just use the LiveCD and don't install it. Obviously after installing it it becomes even faster and no more BSODs or stupid reboots and errors. If only all Windows software was compatible with it then I could dump all Microsoft products off my system .

Ive read a lot about Ubuntu being a bit on the basic side, having a lot of the mroe complicated config tools and options removed from view. Ive heard people complaining about it being a bit too "user friendly", probs if your more experienced in the ways of Linux.
As for my own experiences, being new to Linux I was amazed at how good Ubuntu is. The Live install is a nice touch and installation is painless. Once installed it feels like a "proper" operating system. By "proper" I not only mean stable and responsive, but I think I could probs even give it to my mum at 65 years old and she could even get used to it! The transition from Windows for most home and office use is easy, aspecially with the likes of Firefox, Open Office and Evolution being ready to use from the word go.
Unfortunately there are no Linux drivers for my sound card and no serious audio production applications (although Audacity is getting there), so I cant see me adopting it full time as an OS. However I did manage to set up a web server in about a day, which also amazed me considering Im a linux complete linux noob!

One last think to add, the Synaptic Package Manager! What a good idea, never heard of it before.

Sounds like you have had a good experience of it overall. I am enjoying it and stuff like office work / word docs / excel sheets are easy - its just the games I miss out on - which is one of the weak points of it.

Yeah, I think the majority of commercial developers obviously target Windows which kinda limits Ubuntu to mainly office type use, although I beleive the Server edition aint bad either (dont quote me on that!)
Have you heard of Wine? Not the alcoholic beverage, it allows a lot of PC games (and other apps) to run under Linux. Not tried it tho.

Oh yes, have heard of it but I am not a great fan of emulation - it tends to lower performance quite a bit .
