Windows Vista
Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone is using Windows Vista, if so, what do you think of it? I got a new Dell this morning with Vista; very pretty interface but very tough to work with.

I'm starting to get used to it now. I don't see why people have been moaning about it so much though; set up was a doddle for me: just plug all the stuff in and power up, it was all perfectly fine. As for internet connectivity problems people have been talking about, I've had none of them, just plugged my LAN cable in and got an IP from the router straight away. Must say though, IE renders pages like lightning on Vista!
And thanks for the link Paul.

I am not using Windows Vista but I have read, apart from the pretty interface it has some cool features like Desktop integrated search and file indexing and performance enhancements like ReadyBoost, SuperFetch and Sleep which make a real difference in how you use your PC.

Vista is good - but tempremental - hence the reason a lot of business (like one I work for) have decided to remain with XP.
Vista doesn't really like dual booting (which is the way I use it) and it likes rebooting and asking lots of questions. Its good - and i'll get use to it and I would use it full time if it stopped rebotting so much and having "serious errors".

For me I like to be with XP as I know how to get around and to fix almost any problem that I may encounter with this OS since there is no easy fix for any of MS products due to their big monopoly.

I agree with that.
I would like to change to Vista and "get with the times" but honestly for £199.99 of product I am sorely disappointed that there arn't more updates and more bugs being fixed faster and also help from Microsoft to stop all these random reboot problems I am having with it.

I got vista (ultimate) on my Laptop (Intel 1.6x2 2gig ram) and it runs fine. I just disabled the security center and a bunch of other crap.
I ordered a new pc today too with Vista Ultimate, AthlonXP 64x2 2.6gig, 4gig ram, Geforce7600 and im interested to see how she runs on that.
Best I can advise about Vista is, think like a retard, and youll find it easy, just like the retards that designed it :d

I went out to a customers house a few days ago to install a wireless network.
He had a desktop running XP SP2 and wanted his son's new laptop networked. His new laptop was running Vista and I have to say this was the first time I have used it.
Yes, it looks very stylish and to be honest, it was easy to get set up on the wireless network.
I'm tempted to try it out for myself as a dual boot on my desktop at home, but I dont want to risk any problems by doing so.
David, you said that it does not like dual booting, anything in particular to watch out for if I decide to give it a go?.

I need to buy a laptop soon, but the prospect of having to adopt Vista so early on (and especially on just the one machine) is not one that Im looking forward to.
To be honest I just cant be bothered with it at the moment, I know XP works and so does all my software, I do a lot of high end audio work and I need everything to work "out of the box". I felt exactly the same when XP came out and so I only upgraded when I felt I had no other choice, from what I remember this was a good 12 months after its initial release.
So I now have a decision, do I postpone buying my laptop until Im ready to adopt Vista on both machines, or buy a laptop now and buy a separate copy of XP to install on it.
Both options seem to have their downsides, as I need a laptop now to do audio recording on location I don't think I can afford to wait 12 months. However if I get one now and install XP on it, then I'm going to have to buy two copes of Vista in the future, which will end up being more expensive in the long run.
Any ideas? I'm stumped, although I am sure that I'm not the only person in this situation.

Random reboots - it loves them. Also had several hardware compatibility issues - it doesn't seem to like a lot of network cards and has trouble sharing Internet connections with more than 1 computer.
Also, a sad thing is a lot of hardware providers that have put hardware in computers, even on relitively new computers (mine is 6 months old, bought just before Vista came out, around 3 days before) has hardware in it that still has no new Vista supported drivers available for it which is disappointing to say the least.
Also, since installing Vista in a dual booting system it seems to have caused problems with the XP installation as well with random reboots.
Other than that Vista is quite nice .
I like XP because I have spent loads of money of software that won't work on Vista, especially games, and I am not willing to replace it all at my own expense.

The best thing to do if you want Vista is to buy a completely new computer. Theres no way that Vista would have worked with my old XP laptop, so I went and bought a Dell.
Also, if you buy a new computer at least you are guaranteed the safe assurance that all installed hardware will work with Vista, so that you won't have to take any risks.

I just surprised to read a users post in slashdot that the uninstall option is no longer available after last update in Vista, is that correct? slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/15/1641254

I'm going to wait until my motherboard stops working (again), as from looking at Vista's spec for me it'll require quite a few bits in order for it to run sensibly.

Yes, Vista is overly resource intensive - probably something which makes it a bit unstable.
