Install location
Hi to all,
I hope this is the correct place for this question ?
I have just signed up with the Copper Linux service and have decided to use Fantastico to install a phpBB forum.
One of the first questions asked is for the Installation Directory location with a choice of root or other.
I am planning on using the chat service and also a webpage in conjunction with the forum so which location should I specify ? Should I install it to root or name my own location ?
Any help much appreciated !
Also does anyone know how many ftp addresses I can have with this package ?
Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,
I would suggest you install this to another directory e.g. forum which would then make the forum address www.mydomain.com/forum. This allows you to put other things on your main page to give people the choice of where to go in your site but if you ever did want to have the forum as the main website, you could then put a redirect in place.
Regarding the ftp, you can add different users which have access to different folders of your site. With your account you can have an unlimited number. You will need to know however there is no anonymous ftp which means all users will have to login.
Hope that's helpful. If you want anymore info, just post back on here.

Hi Jonathan,
Thankyou so much for your help, it's much appreciated !
It may sound daft but I'm like a kid in a toy shop and over the moon at finally having my own place.
After having to put up with a Free host it makes a nice change to be able to do things my way.
Talking of which, if I may pick your brains again . . . ?
How do I change the phpBB image to the one you can see in my signature forum ?
How do I add the php chat option ?
If you've got the time [and more importantly the patience . . .] there will be some more questions after these.
Thankyou so much !
Jon

I think you've found the first one regarding the image yourseld.
I'm not sure about the php chat but I would have thought it would come with instructions for adding it?
If it's an addon for the forum (I don't think it is mind) it could be simply unzipping the folder it's contained in and copying the files using ftp the the correct location (possibly forum/addons) on the server.
If it is a stand-alone program (and not installed from Fantastico), it will probably need you to copy files to the server in the directory you want the program, create a sql database (this is done through MySQL in cPanel) and then run the specific file to get the thing to install. As I say though, the program should come with some sort or Readme file.....

Hi Jonathan,
I'm a bit confused by this, the forum in my signature is the free forum that I need to transfer over to my eukhost account. The image in this forum is what I need to transfer over, hence the question.
Thanks for the chat advice, I'll have to have a look around as Fantastico does'nt have it as an option.
Thanks,
Jon

phpBB does not have this transfer option. Do you want to transfer the members/posts etc? If you send me a PM, I can transfer the logo image over for you if you like.

Ah, got you. I wasn't really fully awake when I read your post!
Yes, to transfer everything, you will need to migrate the database across to eUKhost which can be done through mySQL. I'm sure someone (Thomas?) will be happy to help with that. I have exams this week, otherwise I'd offer to do it myself. Also, regarding the logo, I'm a bit rusty on phpBB but I would have thought that there would be an option somewhere for choosing a logo inside the admin section? If you simply save the logo off your current site, upload it via ftp to a directory on eUKhost server and then choose it in the new forum, it should appear....

Yes, I'll be able to migrate this for you. If you want me to migrate the forums for you, please send me a PM on these forums.
