Default Php 5

What plans does EUK have to upgrade all it's php4 servers to use php5?

BTW when i upgraded to a VPS I thought I would be getting a server with php5 on it - but it appears to be only php4

Hello David,

You are currently running PHP 4.4.7. We will surely upgrade your VPS to PHP 5. But if you have sites running off it, then they would face a problem of the version mismatch. Please let us know if you would like us to go ahead with the upgrade.

Hi David

I was considering putting an article on here to explain how to compile and install php 5 from source. Would this be useful to you?

The benefit of compiling from source is that you have built into php only what you need, so it will use less memory inside your VPS and when you compile you can set some flags to optimize it for the hardware available.

Thanks for the replies
Mephisto - that article would be most useful - not just for me, but others as well.
Nick - yes please go ahead - all the sites were running on php 5 on my old reseller account so i don't anticipate any problems if the VPS is upgraded. Perhaps it would be better though if the upgrade were done after 6pm as my secure site users will have gone home by then and it would give me a chance to check things.

Regards

Hello David,

Is 19.00 GMT a good time to do this?

Okay, I'll get a thread over in the VPS forums by the end of the day.

Could you put PM the configure command (available from phpinfo() of your system, then I can make sure php has the features you have right now, or at least the majority of them.

Once you get the hang of compiling from source it's pretty much the same, apart from when you get to the odd ones such as qmail, but that's for an email server.
