Its good to see that you people have such good knowledge. I'll make a post for our knowledgebase from this information as it will help some of our customers who need a forum but want us to help with rest of it.

ROKSO database ( collates information and evidence on known professional spam operations) that has shown the list of 200 Known Spam Operations responsible for 80% of your spam and most of them are from US. Is there any way to block them? Here is the list; spamhaus.org/Rokso/

Hi to all !
I run [in partnership] a PHP2 forum and like many others here have made sure that all new members have to go through the Admin check, etc.
It's usually possible to check user names or email addresses via Google, failing this I send an email asking for confirmation of identity.
If I don't get a reply or if the reply is "robotic", they don't get in !
Fingers crossed, so far so good.
It would be nice to have a more exacting method for checking identities but this just is'nt really possible without a great deal of extra work.
The other source I use is this http://sumbit.com/phpbb_spam.htm
It would be nice if there was a failsafe way of checking applicants but it would appear not.
One day eh . . . ?!

Possibly, but nothing in the world is perfect. You seem to have quite a good method at the moment MonteJon.

Hi David,
Firstly, Thanks for your reply !
As you state, nothing is perfect, however, I do worry about some of these spammers who seek it. They must spend every waking hour devising new methods for spreading their foul taint. For every wall that's built there's someone who wants to knock it down I suppose ?!
As far as our forum is concerned I have to admit a lot of it is done on a "wing and a prayer". I am only too concious that we have several silent members who hav'nt yet posted who could one day burst forth with porn and pills !
Admittedly, there are always a few members on any forum/group who join and then just lay down and do nothing. In some cases they are the backbones of the forum and help with member figures. I suppose a sleeping partner is better than none ?!
Never mind eh ? All part of life's rich tapestry !
Take care !
Jon

Look what I've done on http://www.trwilliams.net/contact

The method I've used it usually very good for preventing spam registrations etc.

Yes that is good Thomas - hopefully no one will write a script and target your website and have a human enter the correct answers into the script. Maybe a random question would make it more secure? As well as making the question (and possibly the answers) into images.

But I suppose it is OK at the moment if your not having any problems with it.

Yeh, I'll make a random script when I get time, but at the moment, it's stopped all incoming spam e-mails.

As long as it does the purpose then you are doing OK. If it aint broke it don't need fixing!
