Uploading pictures in Xoops
I had a problem with Xoops in past solved by disabling mod_security - thanks very much. However, I have a new problem which is really pernicious and hard to track down. Certain of my users are unable to upload photos using the standard packages, and several users get incomplete access to the site. The problems seem to depend on what ISP they use. AOL users cannot upload pictures (although they can on other sites), as well as a user in Scotland using Satellite (although again on other sites he is successful) - and a user or two on Virgin (ntl) cannot even access the site (DNS errors getting to me!)
I have tried everything possible locally - I am only coming to the forum now because I have run out of things to try. Anyone have any ideas? All my other users can upload without problems...
Thanks,
Marc

Hello Marc,
I need to know your domain name and IP address of some of your visitors who are not able to access your website or upload pictures as you said.
Please provide me with details information and I will get this sorted for you.

It certainly seems like an interesting one..... I'm not entirely sure what to suggest. It seems as if there is some kind of issue accessing the servers but if they can access them apart from uploading, that is very strange.... I think it could be some in depth techie people needed as I'm not familiar with Xoops.... But I'd be very interested to see what other people have to say.

Additional data
OK - this is very weird now. I got more data from the Virgin user. He has been contacted finally by Virgin support and they are saying:
"a server called rapidswitch.com are dumping me when I try to connect to you"
What is rapidswitch.com? Why would that be involved in communications to the eukhost server?
Interesting stuff!

I have a feeling that's it could only be dumping them when they do tracert..... This is to do with the firewalls in place (I think this was what we established....). For example, for my site I get this tracert:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms gw-wh.mcc.ac.uk [130.88.52.250]
2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms gw-uom-kb.its.manchester.ac.uk [130
3 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms gw-man-kb.netnw.net.uk [194.66.26.1
4 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms gw-man-rh.netnw.net.uk [194.66.27.1
5 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms so-0-1-0.warr-sbr1.ja.net [146.97.4
6 7 ms 7 ms 6 ms so-3-0-0.lond-sbr4.ja.net [146.97.3
7 6 ms 6 ms 7 ms po1-0.lond-gw-ixp1.ja.net [146.97.3
8 225 ms 157 ms 8 ms ge0-1.linx.lon.rapidswitch.com [195
9 * * * Request timed out.
10 * * * Request timed out.
11 * * * Request timed out.
12 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms agusta.eukdns.com [78.129.128.40]
But I still get the website resolving fine.

Rapidswitch are the old server leasing company. We're no longer taking any servers out with them and have started deploying our new high specification systems in the BlueSquare data centere; these systems allow traceroute.

OK - if rapidswitch are the old leasing company, does that mean that my site ( www.thefocc.com if anyone wants to have a nose!) is on one of these older servers?
I will try to contact the virgin support people myself because unfortunately I am having to filter through a completely non-techy person (and I mean NON) to get to these people...

Tell me about it.... Virgin support is absolutely 100% useless when it comes to getting anything slightly technical sorted.....

Right now your domain is hosted on Islander and Islander is hosted in Rapidswitch. This server has very few accounts so we wont think of moving it sooner as there's absolutely no load on it and performance of this server appears to be perfect as of now.

Believe me I don't want to be moved - service is very good thank you very much! Also, I have an update on the AOL situation. I am sure all of you will be absolutely floored to discover that the AOL browser is pants. I found a reference elsewhere to the AOL browser and dynamically generated sites not getting along - sure enough I got them to change browsers and hey presto - it seems to work! I would have thought of this earlier except I forgot that AOL customers are still kept in the relative Internet dark ages...
I have given the Virgin customer a large mail to send to Virgin support - I will post when I am updated.

I have flushed firewall on Islander so can you ask your customers to check now ?
Traceroute wont work for them but ask them to try tcptraceroute. They can download tcptraceroute from http://www.goheer.com/products/tcptraceroute/
Ask them to provide tcptraceroute results. Our firewalls block normal traceroutes but tcptraceroute can never get blocked by any firewall.

Yea! Problem solved. Why would flushing the firewall on Islander have solved this particular issue? Whatever the answer, I am happy for this problem to be closed off...

It could have been blocking their IP if they'd tried to access the server incorrectly. And as such, the strange things that you were seeing were occurring.

Definitely a strange problem, but at least it is sorted for you now. Firewalls can get funny sometimes if it percieves there to be a threat from a certain IP / computer.
