Does that mean they'll make a version of IE7 which is compatible with past Operating Systems such as Windows 98, ME and 2000? At work we still have some computers running Windows 2000 cannot run IE7.

Yes, same here. No more backwards compatability with IE6 required! I mean come on, if Microsoft the developers arn't supporting it then why am I going to bother?

Not as far as I know. So its upgrade time or live with security holes popping up left right and centre after Jan 2009 .

'98 wasn't too bad for its time! (which has passed - passed many moons ago!).

That's great - hopefully that will convince them!

If that doesn't then tell them they definitely should not be in IT.
Maybe History would suit them better? lol

Almost every school has this problem. You can never get good teachers in IT department as intelligent IT people find good jobs in companies. Those who fail to get jobs choose teaching profession.

For anyone curious the browser stats for the past month on my own site are...
1. Internet Explorer - 81.32%
2. Firefox - 13.60%
3. Safari - 4.75%
4. Chrome - 0.27%
5. Opera - 0.06%
And a breakdown of IE version reveals...
1. 7.0 - 70.53%
2. 6.0 - 26.11%
3. 8.0 - 3.32%
4. 5.5 - 0.04%
...rather interesting to note 1 pesron still uses a very old version of Internet Explorer, whilst over a quarter of people still use version 6.

Eidolon, that's Interesting stats.
I hope people using older browsers are not aware of network security or pirated softwares, I read somewhere few folks are even using IE4 and never thought of upgrading to the latest version.

I don't think anything has changed from IE 4 to IE 8.

At least we have multiple tabs now! And InPrivate sounds interesting, good for when I want to watch porn on a pubic, I mean public computer.
And the rendering's a hell of a lot better, too. Apparently the entire CSS 2.1 specification is supported in IE8.

Because Microsoft is currently selling products, not benefits, in reality most of the big giant companies won't do any radical innovation, the creative & innovative ideas come from unemployed geeks. the Big companies are just hungry to overtake a company which invents new ideas.

I think if Microsoft are retiring IE6 in Jan 2009, there will be fun for many businesses and educational institutions around the world.
Every uni I've been to in the UK (Oxford, Manchester, Newcastle) are running IE6 as are many schools. Same thing in the US with high schools and universities running IE6.
Personally I think it is because it is less resource intensive and they don't have the budget to move to the higher spec stuff needed for IE7.
Could well be a good way in for FF etc. as I think (if I remember correctly) they can run on lower spec machines.

MMU used IE7, FF2 and Safari. But yes, sadly most schools upgrade about once every million years!
On my main DPS Computing website IE and FF are basically neck and neck with MSIE having 20.1% share and Firefox having 19.1%. Netscape lags behind in 3rd with just 0.6%.
Interestingly though, Just under 0.1% of my visitors have been using Internet Explorer 2 (first released in April 1996 for Windows for Workgroups 3.11) and 0.1% of my visitors are using Firefox 0.10.
Some people do worry me!
