How does one build an internet search engine?
I want to own my an internet search engine someday, like yahoo, google, or msn. My problems are that I don't have any money to start this venture and I don't know where to start.
Where do you think I should start? Are there any free scripts that I can start out with until I have enough money to pay some programmers to build one for me?
Any good suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

You'd get few of the best free search engine scripts by looking up them on google itself, here are few results & hope they are helpful:

I've built a search engine was one o0f my first ever projects called zoole.com was a complex script i cant remember which i used now but the speed was excellent (for the 10,000 website hostings in the database nothing like google lol).
I loved the design i did for it im sure you will be able to view it at http://web.archive.org/web/ at the minute its not working for me.
This was just as eUKhost was getting started when i was doing this personal project that i sold on to help fund a server for eukhost those few years ago.
The best way imo to go about this is to use other search engine databases instead of creating your own

Yes, its present in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine (link provided above by Robert). Looks nice. The search engine seems to have ceased operation in late 2004 after starting in 2002. Then for the year of 2006 it just had a short message that mobile content was going to be listed there in the future before finally in 2007 it was converted into a website hosting about World War II collectables which it continues as today.
Hope you find that little bit of history interesting .

excellent bit of history....it is so weird how much website hostings can change over the years. I think the name was more matched as a search engine than a World War II collectible site.

Yes, I agree on that. Maybe one day the web site hosting will be reincarnated as a search engine! . It does seem a bit of a jump that the sites been through in its relitively short life. From search engine to WWII collectables web site hosting in 5 years! It just shows how easily things can change on the 'net!

It seem to me as if I was alittle bit misunderstood, I believe that you guys think that I am talking about a website hosting search engine, a search engine that can be added to a website hosting. Well, that is not the case, I am talking about a world wide web search engine, a kind of search engine that can search the entire internet world.
All of the links above are for search engines that can be added to a website hosting, I want a script that can work by itself, a script that can search the entire world of information. So where can I start?

In my experience, you won't find a script like that - and definitely not free.
If that was the case people like Google and Yahoo wouldn't make so much money because everyone could set up a search engine. It would be a very ambitious thing to try and do and you would probably need to hire a lot of programmers, spend quite a bit of money and have very powerful servers to even scratch the surface of the Internet.
Its definitely beyond the capabilities of an individual and probably out of reach for even most small companies!

Personally i think you should foget this idea before you get too wrapped up in it. There are many other tiny search engines out there; the majority of which are never used and those that are produce their result direct from one of the leading SEs such as Google, Yahoo or MSN.
Google is the biggest of SEs with a share of roughly 82% of the worlds searches (Yahoo follows with around 7%, MSN with 6% and whatever is left from all the other little ones ie ask etc.)
If you wanted to think about it seriously you'd have to have a budget of thousands otherwise your really wasting your time. From a technical point of view it might be an interesting learning experiment but realistically it would never go anywhere.
Best of luck.

If you wish to make something big then work on a Unique concept. You can never think of competing with Google in Online Search market.
you can think of success only if you come up with something unique.

I totally agree - nothing can compete with Google. Lets look at Yahoo! for example, they are second to best and I'm sure they've been around longer than Google. If you wish to make something as successful as Google then the ambition is a bit vague.

Yahoo! started '94. Google started '98.
Unless you have something new to add - like a new revolutionary way to do things (such as Google) you won't even begin to scrape the surface unfortunately . You need to offer something different as if you don't what reason do people have to switch away from a trusted brand?
