Default Opera 10 Alpha release

An alpha version of Opera 10 is now available for public testing and general sneak peaks of the latest upcoming release of the Opera web browser. It includes a variety of new features including, something I really like, spell-checker as you type and the red underlined text is nicely visible should you make typos or what not

The thing that strikes me is the number of versions and the upcoming version of Opera - already Opera 10! Probably in the year 2000 they had version 7 or something lol. They have been around since around 1994 according to Wikipedia, and if you take into account versioning with Firefox, seems Opera likes to make lovely leaps as soon as possible .

I've been using Opera for some time now, probably about 3-4 days and I quite like it, its quite fast and has built-in cookie manager where you can modify and delete individual cookies by going to the "Delete Private Data" section which I like to do when I'm creating new scripts and testing cookie security.

The major problem I use to have which I have got use to is if you double-click on text and hyperlinks it shows right-click options, which is annoying if you aren't use to Opera. They, unfortunate for some () still have this feature in Opera 10 for text only, you can double-click hyperlinks fine in Opera 10 now.

Opera 10 surprisingly has not got one major or slightly different change to its design, rather it seems there are backbone changes: (few quotes from Opera's website)

Quote:
gives people a taste of Opera’s new rendering engine
Quote:
Opera has fine-tuned its standards support and, as a result, Opera 10 alpha achieves an Acid3 100/100 Test score
The only problem for me in Opera 10 is Java apps that are loaded in the browser are a little weird, because if I scroll down the Java app seems stuck for a second or so.

Seems no change to the rendering of most websites I go on, which seems obvious anyway as there is no need for change with the rendering system unlike IE8 for example

You can read the press release about Opera 10 Alpha Opera 10 sneak peek and download it here: Opera Web Browser | Faster & safer | Download the new Internet browsers free

Opera is my second browser, always has been. Depending on what wasy Firefox goes it may be my first browser. It wont be long before Mozilla stops running security updates for Firefox 2 and focuses on Firefox 3. Awsomebar is enough for me to drop Firefox completely and switch to Opera though.

I tried Opera out a while ago, wasn't crazy about it. But I've heard good things about it since, might be interested in this.

I have it installed but only use it if Firefox decides to go crazy.

You mean when it starts eating RAM like sweets?

Funnily enough I have never had a RAM issue with Firefox. Most she has taken is 80MB which is fine when you have between 2 and 4 gig (least till I get fired )

My Firefox has taken up to 512MB sometimes and up to 50% of the CPUs which has caused a big slowdown. Apaprently part of this is due to memory leaks and people like me who like to keep cache, download history for a reasonable amount of time it also doesn't like that.

Cleared them both yesterday and firefox now seems to be behaving again. Apparently Mozilla are focusing on trying to eliminate the memory "leaks" from Firefox .
