Default problem in web page

hi
If I need to create a pic to use as a button what program do I do it in, and how do I save it (meaning will it be a .jpeg or .gif)?

The problem I am having is that when I am creating something in PowerPoint or word, then save it... it saves the WHOLE page with my graphic within the page. I want to just be able to save whatever graphic (i.e. button) I create.During net surfing ,I have seen many web website hosting design company's website hostings, looking great.I have taken some idea from designing website hostings...........

Please help! Thank you so MUCH!

If you do it in Word - and then save the file as a web page (html) - the pictures will be saved seperately for you as gif

you'll need a graphics creation application like photoshop. Good free alternatives are paint.net or artweaver, if you want something approaching the power of photoshop then there's Gimp - but it has a steep learning curve. All of these are free and will allow you to optimize your images for the web.

Sometimes if you want to make buttons there are also several online tools which can be used for this. Search something like 'online button creator' in a search engine and you should get the relevant results.

To be standards compliant you'll probably need an alt tag in there so something like:

HTML Code:
<a href="URL"><img src="../your pic .gif.or.jpg" width="100" height="19" alt=""></a>
or

HTML Code:
<a href="URL"><img src="../your pic .gif.or.jpg" width="100" height="19" alt="Link1"></a>
The alt tag is what will show up when you leave your mouse over an image.
