What should i charge for 6 additional pages to update a site?

Hi,

I've recently completed a website for a client.

It was one of those projects that kinda grew "arms and legs" once the ball started rolling with the client asking for additions to it along the way, which were not part of the initial design brief.

Now, at the time I made a few exceptions as the client was actually related to a friend ( and I'm an all round nice guy ).

However, this morning he emailed me asking for a few updates to the site.

Because of the nature of his business, I knew there would be work involving updates to the site every few months and in hindsight I could have went down the CMS route but as I said, the initial brief was for a static XHTML site and things snowballed before I knew what was happening.

Anyway, he is asking for another 6 pages of content. Each page will require an individual Flash animation which is unique to the page as well as a gallery of images.

I've emailed him back saying that it can be done but I will need to look at charging an additional fee this time as it's over and above the already completed and paid for web site as it stands in its present form.

But to be honest, I haven't a clue as what to charge for the 6 pages!!.

Any recomendations on what to fee, ball park figures?.

Estimate how long it'll take you and then bill him per house. Based on that I would say around 2-3 hours, so somewhere between £50 and £100.

That is actually a lot less than I had in mind!!!.

I am unsure how to approach this. Some folk on other forums have suggested I bill per hour at around £50-£65 ph.

Others have as you have done, suggested a fixed fee for the updates and additional pages.

Some people have said to charge "per page", somewhere around the £50 per page mark.

Not really sure what way to move on!!.

I normally charge per hour, but normally give a base price for any website as £120 as I've done enough sites now to know how long each bit will take me. My one bit of advice is certainly not to charge more than £50, if you do then your client is likely to go looking elsewhere - the larger media firms charge £50/hour max.

I don't think charging per page is a good idea either since nearly every web page is different.

I would give him a rough estimate, do the work, and then issue him with an invoice once completed based on how long it has taken you.

Hi,

I think you should not allow your client to take advantage of you. I hope you have signed a contract with him before you started the project. If not, then you can clearly state a figure calculating the effort that would be required to complete those pages.

Don't be confused, just weigh the time and effort required to complete the task and quote according to it.

Charge the page update by calculating the half price of the page creation. If you charge £20 to create a flash page, then charge him £10 for update. But if those updates are almost as new pages, go with the full price.
