Best for billing?
The company I work for is an already established firm, selling fire protection materials to the construction industry, but do sell a fair bit in the DIY market. We've been looking at starting up an online shop, and doing the research I'm still none the wiser as to which billing system to use.
We don't want to handle the credit card details ourselves, so something like Protx seems to suit us. But does anyone here have any recommendations?

If you are selling your products online then X-Cart, GoECart are good ones that I will recommend.

You can consider ZenCart or OSCommerce. Both are quite good and many of our members are using both this shopping carts so you should have no problems with them.

I think you missed what I was saying
We've already settled on the cart system*, its the actual billing side of it we can't decide on such as Worldpay v Paypal.
*Well we think we've decided. Virtuemart blends into the existing Mambo based website hosting well, but we're going test out OScommerce as well

It depends on what your selling; Modernbill seems quite good, you can buy it for other scenarios as well as webhosting. If you're looking to head down the 'free' root, I would use maybe a combination of PHPCoin and Paypal.

I would suggest you to go for both. It costs nothing to get paypal and advantages of worldpay are far better than any other merchant gateway in UK. If you wish to keep your costs low then consider 2checkout as your merchant gateway for processing credit cards.

Yes Paypal has always been good for me. Heard a lot of good about worldpay also but not had experience of them.

Maybe consider a commercial payment processor, so your company name appears on your client's bank statements, it's always a good idea to do this as it avoids confusion.

Worldpay is reputed one in UK but they are expensive, 2 checkout could be one of the alternate solution, you may also check with google checkout, they are now available for UK merchants.

Google Checkout would be a better option for everyone now as they are offering Free processing till December 2007 and even after that they will keep low processing charges. Seems like now its going to be tough for those who have ruled online credit card processing industry.
not sure what sort of problems would come up for gateways like authorize.net, worldpay, nochex, 2checkout and other well known online payment gateways.
Google has touched this industry as the adwords business wont have much impact on it if google eliminates all online payment merchant gateway but they wont look at shared hosting market as most of the hosting companies put all their money back in adwords and income from hosting companies is major part of google's income.
Hopefully I am right

That has been a case with many people running online business. All that they manage to earn is bread and butter and the actual income goes to Google, eBay INC, Microsoft and other leading Giants on web.
You earn something and you put that back in advertisements with this kings of web world.

Its clever the way they do it - but at least they give you something to give back to them rather than it being take take take all the time!

They have to give something to you to keep their business running as they need people to come to them to have their products sold. no one can sell a product without customers.
You earn by working on your computer and Microsoft earns from the license copy you purchased to run your machine. chain is long enough. If you take a closer look then you will see where most of the money flows
