In a word; yes. I think that Skype is an incredible piece of software. I've used it to talk to friends, family and people on the other side of the world that I've never met, let alone spoken to or seen before. All of this, of course, requires no extra cost other than what I pay for my Internet connection anyway.
I've seen several Skype phones advertised recently, and would be interested in learning more. Has anyone had any experience with them?

I have been a long-term user of Skype, thinking it was wonderful and would have agreed with all the praise mentioned here, but I recently discovered that the above statement about its cost is not necessarily accurate ...
Last month I was surprised to receive an email alert that my monthly bandwidth allowance had reached 50% — on 10th March (normally this happens between 17th - 23rd)! I could not account for this doubled consumption but made a conscious decision to be careful. (Note: My ISP, Zen Internet plan is capped at 20GB/month).
The 75% warning arrived on 23rd and I became more concerned (and careful)! The 90% warning came on the 26th and I knew there was a problem so began investigating my firewall logs and studying my router's Syslog output.
I was horrified to discover the huge volume of packet I/O from Skype — yes it had always been significant but this was now ridiculous and turning Skype off made NO difference whatsoever! I had become what I would describe as being a super-node on their peer-to-peer network!
I tried a variety of filtering tactics to curb this behaviour and soon realised Skype is so dynamic in its usage of different ports that it was impossible to control — googling for info confirmed that it's almost impossible to remove or filter unless you invest heavily in particular hardware or software.
Anyway, buying an extra 2GB of bandwidth on the 27th was only a temporary fix as it had gone by the 29th! I bought another 5 to see me through ...
I am very fortunate that I have been able to remove this juggernaut, only thanks to my Zen plan giving me 8 static IP addresses — I have a non-NAT network and use 3 or 4 of these IPs all the time, with the Skype traffic being on just one of them. So I simply stopped using that IP address and the problem disappeared completely — my used bandwidth this month is currently showing as only 4.161GB !!
I bet that's made some of you go scuttling off to check this out ...

I like the Eqo service in skype where you can call to your Skype buddy lists by initiating call and get connected them directly on their cell phones ( The phone should supported for Sun Microsystems' Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME).

Gadge, I've never heard of such a problem before, but an horrified. It's very good to see that you finally got the problem sorted.
Fortunately, I am on an uncapped connection so I don't believe I would incur any addition costs if I were to experience the same problem. However, as you said, I will be sure to check of Skype regularly now to ensure that it is not using masses of bandwidth!

Skype is for VOIP (voice over IP) or telephony over the Internet. Downloading and using the Skype engine is free, to talk or message-chat with other computer users, unless you want to call landline or cellular telephone numbers in which case you must buy usage credits (top up your account).
However as I pointed out earlier, in certain circumstances you can become one of their peer-to-peer supernodes and then your use of bandwidth can increase significantly! During the time I suffered this problem I would also say that any conversation I had over Skype was of a lesser quality than I had experienced previously, with frequent glitches and audio distortion.
I no longer use it ...

Yes, it's basically a phone service for the computer. If you sign up for Skype-In you can get a main land line number set-up for your Skype account. If you sign-up for Skype-Out then you can make calls to land line phones from your Skype account.

Dear CftxP, when I wrote my earlier reply to you I hadn't read all of the other recent posts today, but having answered your question I then found that 90% of the other recent posts were all written by you and in most cases, they were trivial questions or comments, one-liners mostly!
You're young and enthusiastic, that's good! BUT, you also made it perfectly clear to all of us that what you're really doing is posting as much as possible today to reach 30 messages that will help you qualify for a free domain name!
You've just asked me a pointless question, for which I already gave you the answers — the only other suggestion I might have made to you is to go and use Google to do some research on VOIP and Skype, so I apologise for not doing so.
When I claim my free domain, I'm going to ignore these two messages in my post count ...

Anyone in the world, but you have to pay.
May I echo what 247h said:
You have made it pretty clear that you're trying to reach 30 posts to claim your free domain. Don't deny it, it's pretty obvious.

If you're that desperate, just buy one...

Fair enough, but asking questions like 'Why do you need an IP address to access the FTP service?' aren't going to get you far. You need to post helpful things, not go and ask obvious things like that. I'll be putting in a request to have all messages from your first one downwards on this thread deleted, because they have no link to the thread at all.

I've seen some hosts using Skype, as I'm setting up my own design business, would it be an idea to get Skype to let clients contact me? And maybe Skype-In and Skype-Out to make communicating easier?
Out of interest:
If anyone is with another that uses Skype, do you bother to use it to talk to them, or do you just use the normal phone?

lol
you are simply behaving like a Kid and thats what makes me laugh about guys of your age. even Josh ( Flesso ) is as young as you but see the quality of work he does and knowledge he has got.
Even his parents wont give him money to buy domains or anything else online but he has established his web development business and he needs no money from his parents.
