If you are talking about success in terms of internet marketing then it is definetly measurable.
It is not at all difficult to measure the success provided by your marketing efforts on internet. There is only one thing regardless of what your marketing strategies are is the conversion rate. With the help of conversion rate you can easily figure it out whether you were able to achieve the specific goal of your marketing efforts.

Yeah as above, have you acheived what you set out to do? And also are you doing better than your competitors?

I see doing better as being a bit of a grey area, I mean whats the point in having more users than a competitor if you are not making as much money, or if the service you provide is not as good.

Well I think it depends on what you are trying to do. If you have taken the time out to plan things properly then you can measure your success by how well you have stuck to your plans and acheived the goals you set out to acheive.

Obviously as you said any business based around something like the internet cannot plan too far ahead into the future as situations can change very quickly, with the rise and fall of new technology and concepts.

If your talking about tracking the return on a monitory investment then did you plan to have the investment paid off in x amount of time? if so then how did you plan on doing this. If your business is to make money then surely you are seeing some success if your sticking to your financial projections?

just thought I should add that Im not a business expert or anything! Although this is an area in which Ive done a lot of research.
