Can be better, but may not be better. With an open source community, you don't have the assurance that your question will get answered, it may just end up being another thread with no answer. At least with phone support, you're garaunteed to get an answer.

thats not the case with phpbb. I've always seen them replying to each and every question posted on their forum. its not that they don't earn out of phpbb. All the advertisements and all their sponsors pay them good amount.

Yes phpBB is very valuable to the people that own it. Just the name will bring them in money and the fact that advertisers can reach millions of website hostings through the phpBB forum.

Most "free" products earn a lot of money in many other ways to cover there costs (and sometimes make quite a bit of profit). Look at the post in the Off Topic section about the $55 million that Firefox have made!!
