Default Web design charges

I have been approached by a client with a very simple requirement for a website hosting and I am unsure how much to charge, normally for a simple website hosting I would work on a turnaround of 4 days using the following schedule (this is what I have told the client so far)...

To begin with I will require you to provide me with the required info and images, I will then create a website hosting design brief and forward you a copy for you to confirm ASAP.

Once you have confirmed the design brief, this is how these days would then be used...

Day #1: I register the domain name on your behalf and begin creation of your website hosting.

Day #2: The domain name will take at max 48hrs to fully work its way through the internet. On this day I will complete creation of your website hosting.

Day #3: Domain name will be registered and website hosting will be online. On this day you can view your website hosting and send me some feedback.

Day #4: I will implement any amendments/corrections you require (within the original design brief). Your website hosting will be online and complete by end of Day #4.

However this is what the client is after...

I'd like to know in your opinion how much would it cost to buy, register and develop a ".com" address?

The website hosting would initially consist of just single page containing the following:

A background screen size photo image
A much smaller foreground image
A sentence or two of text
A hyperlink to another website hosting

I would like to stick to my proposed schedule as it allows me plenty of time in case I have problems, meaning I can make sure I deliver a professional service and deliver the website hosting within the proposed timeframe.

However I cannot justify what I would normally charge, as in reality to create such a simple website hosting it will not take many hours.

So, if you could be so kind, I would like to benefit from your opinions once again. How much would you guys charge for this website hosting and how would you schedule your time?

Thanks

Thanks thats interesting

Well I sent the guy a quote for £50, I am hoping if he is happy with that I will be able to retain his business when he decides to develop the website hosting further.

You can also take the average hourly rate where you live, and decide your rate working per hour.

Personally i go for a set price for a project, that way the client is safe in the knowledge that the price will not spiral out of control. Then i charge an hourly rate for any updates etc following the completion of the project. Always ensure you have a clear understanding of the exact specification of the project so the client doesnt keep adding or changing things.

As for the specific price per project or per hour this is essential up to you but should reflect the quality of your work - charging the cheapest isn't always better!

This is a problem I have frequently - I would use a rule of thumb of wanting to make £50 a day - so if realistically it will only take a day to make and test and stuff, £50 will be fine.

Ain't that the truth, some guy emailed me for a quote - I gave him what I thought was fair, and his reply was something like - "haha, for that price, you must be terrible at what you do".

My Quote - £150
He Spent - £2000

He contacted me several months later wanting his website hosting fixed and code cleaned up.

My emailed reply was something like this...

"Sorry, I would help you out, but I am too busy being terrible at what I do"

Not very professional, but I thought it was kinda funny!

Hehe. Bet someone learned a lesson that day . I would look at the quality of the previous work as the first factor and disregard the price and only consider it second.
