What do you guys think about web directories? I want to start a web directory site, do you think I can be successful? Is there any GOOD free software that I can use? I want a web directory like yahoo, dmoz or like any of the popular web directories on the net.

A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links.

A web directory is not a search engine, and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords, instead it lists web sites by category and subcategory. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site, rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only one or two categories. Web directories often allow web site hosting owners to directly submit their web site hosting for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness.

Some directories are very general in scope and list website hostings across a wide range of categories, regions and languages. But there are also a large number of niche directories, which focus on restricted regions, single languages, or specialist sectors.

Again, due to competition, I would also subscribe to the theory that it is best to by a small yet resonably successful website hosting and expand on it. There might be an initial outlay but if you put time and effort into the web site hosting I am sure that it will turn out to be profitable.
