How much importance does a Search Engine gives to the actual matter or data on the home page? Is that more than the back-links?
By "Actual matter or data" I think you mean "content", No doubt content has greatest importance because this is one of the factor by which search engines rank your website according to the quality of your content also if you produce unique content, it will help you to get backlinks naturally and you'll find many websites start linking back to your website that means content has more importance than backlinks, it make easier to get backlinks.. Also the homepage has greater significance, it's important page for both human visitors and search engines, the content at homepage needs to be extremely relevant to your site's theme.
Does the sub-domain pages have less importance in Search Engines?
Nope, Google consider sub domain as regular domain so it would have similar importance like main domain name. While using subdomain it would be best if you add vertical content to your subdomain page that can support it as a standalone page. For example Google is using subdomain like maps.google.com, news.google.com, code.google.com etc and all are standalone and have individual importance.
