Default addon domains in serp

About results of addon domains in the serp of google, i often noticed that they sometimes appear in two ways:

Right way - www. addondomain.com

Wrong way - www. maindomain.com/addondomain

off course by clicking on the second link we can get a 301 redirect to the www. addondomain.com but from :

a) an esthetic point of view
b) from a Search Engine Optimization point of view

different keywords, mismatching arguments from the key of the two domains, too long urls...can't penalize an addon domain?

is there a way to avoid the "wrong" indexing of the addon domain's url ?

you can add an exclusion into the robots.txt file for maindomain to stop robots crawling that directory. Also, if you use the webmaster tools that google provides you can remove directories from the results. So once you've fixed robots.txt you can request removal of the directory

And also, obviously manual submission to the search engine of the "right way" you want it to be listed will ensure that the domain is listed as addondomain.com and not maindomain.com/addondomain.

Hope that helps .

tnx for replies

I used robots.txt to disallow some folders the first time i noticed this problem on an old domain, but i think it was too late because i already had full of links to 'wrong' url everywhere... now that i'm starting with new main-addon domains i'll try to keep them safe from beginning

Yes, it is hard to undo something that has already been listed. There are many references to website hostings on the Internet that died a long time ago and even for quite a while after the website hosting goes down the actual website hosting is still listed in some search indexes.

I think it would be better to have seperate domain name considering your situation rather than go for a sub domain or if you continue with add-on domain try to get dedicated IPs.

Yes if you've got your own server or a reseller account the best way to avoid the problems you are encountering is set up a new sub account for the add on domain which will in turn make it a main domain and eliminate your problems.

Hope that helps .

Paul, I'm a bit confused? Why considering his situation? How is his situation different from anyone using addon domains?

Would you recommend a reseller account for someone who only wanted to manage their own domains or just for resellers? Any disadvantages of doing so, apart from increased cost?

I ask because I'm not sure whether to manage my many domains through one standard package with loads of addons or pay a lot more for the reseller. I'm not in a position yet to consider VPS Hosting or dedicated.

Depends how much money is available and willing to spend but it seems this situation could easily be managed on a shared account (subject to the space requirements and bandwidth usages of the website hostings as well as the number of sites).

Hope that helps .
