.edu and .gov backlinks have no better effect than a standard .com .net .co.uk etc. however they do obviously potentially have benefits in respect to potential traffic.

Do a search for a "hub tool" - or you can sticky me and I'll throw you a link to an open source one.
It saves time, but isn't going to be a magic pill.
