Default Google Plan for Social Networking

Google has plan for launching a social networking website hosting, they've given hint about this recently; bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/11/google-hints-at-social-network-plan/
Just wondering how that “social graph,” originated from Social Networks will serve up adsense?

They'll do well to beat the likes of Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. Especially Facebook - I love it.

I don't see how you can get people to move from Facebook, particularly once they get to uni. It's just become part of uni culture!
And how come I can't find you on Facebook David? I've tried searching for you....

Well, they've already stronger base of user groups like google groups & members from adword/adsense etc, I don't think they should have any problem to compete with other top social networking website hostings.

They will make it popular like they did with youtube. At least they will pull those who have no knowledge of online social networking.

I'm still going to hold back from it. Quite a lot of people who used to use myspace have now moved to Facebook so they will have to have some amazing features to make people change. Facebook easily becomes an addiction and now many people are using it, trying to make Google attractive initially could be a challenge as if people see a lack of people they know on it they will question why they want to join. The way I would go if I was Google is to aim for the slighter older generation which haven't been grabbed by facebook....

I am around there in facebook, that have lot of features that make it interesting place for networking also there is no any age restriction there, btw why you think google should come for slighter older generation? Is that really too old.

I just think that facebook has attracted the majority of students and so it could be difficult to get into that market. Older users may be more attracted to a slightly different type of web site hosting which is aimed more towards their needs.

Along with the popularity which Facebook has today among the masses, the popularity which will be attracted by social networking web site hosting from Google or from anyone else will basically depend on what features it offers and also how user friendly it is for the users.

Yes that's correct, but how many people really utilize all features?

The main feature of a social networking web site hosting is being able to interact with the people you know. With facebook, most people at university are members and as such you can interact with them (and people join after being asked repeatedly "Are you on facebook?") and I think that could be the main problem for google. If none of your friends are on the site, you lose interest in it and go somewhere else.

I hope both google and yahoo are coming up with next generation social networking web site hosting that will have great feature, if you take example of yahoo's mosh networking site; techcrunch.com/2007/07/09/screen-shot-of-yahoo-mosh-plus-nokia-has-a-mosh-too/ , you can create a profile page for your friends and can invite them from other social networking sites to join with you without losing yours existence on those sites. This feature may create debate but you will appreciate these move to get together with your friend network from all social networking web site hosting with ease and you'll go on adding your friends...

You see when I get invites for website hostings like that, they go straight into the junk folder... I want a web site hosting to have features I want and will be useful and if it has those I will go there myself. Fair enough, once it catches on people will move but it has to have something better to offer than facebook for it to catch on in the first place. This is why I say it might be better to aim a web site hosting to an audience that isn't being targetted by facebook/myspace etc.

Well, I too agree that they should go little vertical, let us see what will come out in near future. For me at my level these social networking sites are nothing else other than word of mouth or I should say SN sites are the future of word-of-mouth marketing nothing else.

Seems like someone else beat me to the idea of a social networking web site hosting for the older generation!
