Default Length and content of title tags.

The website hosting in work is dynamically generated. I have just updated the website hosting so that the page title we enter into our CMS is also included in the main tite tag at the head of the page, instead of just within the page content area.

Before my changes the page titles were the same for each page...

Our Short CompanyWebsite Hosting Slogan! - OurDomain.com

Our new page titles now look like this...

Our Short CompanyWebsite Hosting Slogan! - OurDomain.com -- The Page Title...

This gives now gives me two questions. First, what is the maximum recomended length for page titles? Plus, is this the best format for our page titles, or could they be re-arranged to be more effective?

Thanks

Maximum is somewhere around 65 chars with spaces.

Then it shows up nice in most search engines, you can go longer but most will not read the rest of the chars. As for arranging you don't really need to have an order, but to keep with standards I go for Company name first, slogan if that's what you want to be indexed for, otherwise put all the keywords in that you want to be top hits for. I tried the slogan for a while but found I didn't even need the hits I was getting. Instead i've now put select keywords made into sentences describing what the company sells/values

The maximum length of title tag should not be more than 68 characters including characters and spaces. Too short in length may not provide enough information, and too long will reduce the relevance of each word in the title.

Put your most important keywords of a page in the page title tag: Keywords in the Title tag enhance the relevance of your web page, when an Internet surfer searches the web with that keyword.

It is not recommended to use your company name in the Title tag unless you think it will attract more users. Instead of putting your company name and slogan in the title tag, you can consider a suitable keyword, which can ensures higher ranking of your website hosting.

If the Title tags are too lenghthy, google wont pay attention in your title tag. The rule says that it should be kept upto 10-12 keywords. Although you may extend the length of title tag but too long might be ignored by search engines. The most important term in title tags is that , the title should match the subject of given web page and also the important keywords should be considered.

Yep, if you target catchy keywords and avoid repeatation the number will be more appropriate, you may also consider to make your content "keyword rich".

The W3C, in their page W3C - The TITLE element in HTML, states: "The title should ideally be less than 64 characters in length. That is, many applications will display document titles in window titles, menus, etc where there is only limited room." A 64 character limit is a good starting place, but oversimplifies things a bit.

Google will display up to 66 characters of a title tag, cropping to complete words. For example, the following title is exactly 68 characters, so Google leaves off the last word in the title when displaying the website hosting in its search results:
