Question Tagging

How much of a difference does it make in tagging your threads or posts on a forum? Is it a waste of time or does the google bots really pick up these keywords? Thanks.

Definitely, it is not a waste of time

Yes, Google bots really pick those keywords. These keywords might help you to bring traffic as well as increase the Page Ranking.

Default Title Tags | Meta Tags

The Tags in short describes your company and its products / services. The Search Engines have their own ways and policies which fetches these words searched by the user and displays the contents from the Tags. If the keywords is entered in the search box by the user are exactly same as the keywords updated in your Tags. The search engine will display your website at the first top 10 results.

I think any work done is never a waste of time. Work can be termed as waste if done at the wrong time...

Yes, also tagging help you to connect with targeted readers, users generally save the page and share them and thus help you to generate traffic.

Tagging is definitely not a waste of time and it will give you good results if it is done properly.

You can link keywords and threads on your forum and this will help visitors to find the correct thread and information on the forum which will make a positive difference in the opinion they will have about the forum on your website as they will find the information they require quite easily.

Also, if you link the keywords and forum posts to your main website, it will increase the rankings of the website and it will also help you to get more traffic on the main website.

vBulletin has an option for showing tag clouds but I don't think it's widely used for forums.

That's right, not many forums use tag clouds although many of them do have tags enabled. Tag clouds are generally used more on blogs and web portals.
