Web directory types

I've started submitting my website hosting to different free web directories.
Can you tell me if there is a difference between free, reciprocal and paid directories?
I mean are the the efforts and the money spent for paid and reciprocal directory submission justified by greater earnings in awareness, traffic and clients?

Give priority to free online directories only. It's not worth to pay for listing in directories. you can find at least few thousand online directories that allow free listing.
