Recently I was having issues with my godaddy vps so I've been scouring the net for a new vps provider that doesn't charge silly prices, doesn't cram their servers to the brim and offers good support.
The problem with looking at reviews of hosts is that people with problems seem to be the most vocal but overall I found a good mix with eukhost, so I thought I'd give them a whirl.
I've been with various hosts over the years and being self employed I've little time to mess around with issues. I run a couple of personal sites and host for 3 companies (just started out on that). None of these sites are really busy so naturally you'd expect that finding a hosting plan for a reasonable price would be easy. Yeah right, think again!
I won't bore you with all my hosting experiences but I will start from my last host, a vps with godaddy. Overall it wasn't a bad vps until recently when out of the blue it's dropped in speed dramatically. A simple SMF forum was sometimes taking 15 seconds to generate one page where previously it was less than 1 second. Thinking it was just a temporary problem I waited for a few days, no change. My members were starting to complain so I contacted godaddy. "the server is up and running" was pretty much the response, no help, nothing. "Yeah, I know it runing, but it's having severe on/off speed issues". "the server is up and running" was effectively all I could get out of them. A week later I thought it's time to move on before I loose my business customers too.
So I scoured the net and eventually decided in eukhost.
I initially decided to go with the basic VPS and the LXADMIN panel as I'd read that cPanel can take up more memory and resources and that LXADMIN was quite server light compared to cPanel (couldn't 100% confirm either way).
Anyway, I received my email with the details and began to get things up and running. Problems arose immediately, When I created an FTP account they didn't work, so I went on to live chat and asked for help. They said it was a new control panel to them so they couldn't offer an easy quick fix and I should raise a ticket. Unfortunately I'd had a bad day so I wasn't in the best of moods so with this let down I didn't have the patience to wait for an unknown lengthy fix. I needed to get on.
So with bad mood intact I spoke to accounts and arranged to re-do the VPS with cPanel instead. Once again I must apologise for my shortness to accounts and support. They were both very helpful and professional and my bad mood didn't rub off on them thankfully.
Anyway, once I'd paid the difference for cPanel the tech team immediately set to work and created me a new VPS account. This cheered me up no end as it was happening there and then. 20 minutes later I had a new VPS with cPanel/WHM and I was good to go.
WHM was new to me and the initial setup while probably dead easy for those in the know was a little daunting for me as it was asking questions I've not come across before. So I plodded on shoving in the details I thought it needed. Then I thought hang on, if they're wrong it's not gonna work, so I dived back into live support and they went in and put the correct details in, brilliant! - no long waits, no messing around, fixed.
As eukhost is new to me and I didn't know what the service was like so I moved across one of my hobby forums, re-pointed the domain etc etc.
Woooohoooo, I thought as it's zooming along like never before. Pages are created at super speedy paces, images are transferred really fast and downloads max out my 8mb broadband. I've never had that before from anywhere!
I did find that PHP was missing a few modules I needed like GD and PSpell, so I thought I'd contact support and see what they can do. With other hosts I've been told "oh, we can't add those as it would require a re-compile!" meaning they can't be arsed, but with eukhost they said they'd do it and you bet, within an hour it was done. Now that is real nice!
Currently I'm moving across the other sites to see how it all goes. I guess the big test for me will be when I turn on the vbulletin forum, God I've had issues with that with other hosts. It's not even that busy. At the most we have no more than 10 members active and perhaps 20 odd guests which isn't a lot really.
So as things stand at the moment it's really REALLY nice to have a support team that you can get hold of instantly and they'll help you. Even if I was told "it's a problem we're working on, it'll take a few hours", I don't mind, so long as I'm told the honest truth and not get fobbed off then I find that's the best approach.
Every host has problems. But what is good is that eukhost allows its members to post about their problems for the whole world to see without trying to cover things up. It shows that the support team do look into issues and do take it's members seriously. Keep it up.
I will say that the VPS I'm on is the fastest I've ever encountered. If the service continues on as it is right now then you can bet I'll be going for upgrades in the future.
Fast server and a good support team, that's what will make eukhost grow and grow, too many times do hosts ignore their customers and just offer pre-written cut and paste email replies, so please do keep up the support side it's extremely handy and worth the money alone.
Oh and for those wondering which control panel to go for, pay the little extra and go for cPanel/WHM, it's the biz
Eventually (if things continue as they are) I'll definitely end up moving to a dedicated server as my business grows and although I've not been with eukhost very long I do hope I've finally found a good solid home
