Core files?
Recently in my public_html folder there are a load of core.23231 files (well it is core.[random numer])
Does anyone know that these are, can I delete them or do they need to stay?

Not sure what they are, but you are not alone as I have them in several of my directories inside public_html

Same here
I have exactly the same problem.
At first they were appearing in my coppermine directory.
I uninstalled coppermine and they are now in the public directory.
As fast as I delete them they reappear.
They have now filled my webspace and I have received two "warning" emails from eukhost.
I opened a ticket but eukhost say that they are not putting the files in there.
There must be something Eukhost can do, thats 3 of us now.

Now you mention the space thing. I just checked my disk usage and these core files have eaten approx 10Gb of my space, wonder how long it will take them to eat up the remaining 5Gb

10Gb? did you mean 10Mb?
My space of about 120Meg was filled overnight.
I deleted all the files this morning 3 times and the space is full again now.
Can someone from Eukhost investigate please?

No I mean't 10 Gigabytes....

Wow.
I got the same reply from the different people that answered the ticket ie you can use the file manager to see the files. Not much help.
They did say that Eukhost were not responsible.
I will be very dissapointed if they are having uninstalled the coppermine photo gallery.

I just deleted 3Gb of them (194 files) just from one directory, trouble is they are all over the place. If I had to guess I'd say a new file is created in the directory everytime a page is served.

You are probably correct, I was deleting the files then checking that the website hosting still worked, then going back to the cpanel the files had reappeared.
Got to go now, will check back later.
A comment from Eukhost would be appreciated. |

PHP Suexec was enabled on firefly recently as some customers were running applications which were overloading the server and as they were running under nobody ownership so we were not able to track who was the culprit.
Seems like you all are using CMS like Joomla or Mambo which has previously created files with nobody permissions in your account. You will need to open a ticket for our support team and provide your domain name in the ticket as that will help our system admins to make necessary settings for your account to stop creation of core files in your webspace.

It has been fixed,In PHPsuexec mode your scripts and directories can have a maximum of 755 permissions (read/write/execute by you, read/execute by everyone ) and permission for files should be 644.
So please don’t set any file/folder permission to 777 to avoid such dump core file problem.

These .core files are usually partial uploads made through File Manager in cPanel. If your upload gets interrupted for some reason, the .core files get left. Its usually not possible for the user to delete them as I believe File Manager uploads run under the nobody user until they complete, so you would probably have to ask support to delete them for you.
