Dreamhost asking clients to block GoogleBot
Dreamhost representatives are guiding their clients to make all their website hostings “unsearchable and uncrawlable by search engine robots”, because they cause “high memory usage and load on the server”. I get puzzled after reading this news, could not find any specific reason why they're doing that. seopedia.org/internet-marketing-and-Search Engine Optimization/dreamhost-asking-clients-to-block-googlebot/

That just seems completely rediculous! If the server is getting overloaded then they should have the website hostings spread out over more servers. What do you think customers are going to be thinking now? I think by doing this DreamHost can kiss goodbye to quite a few customers...

"You can keep your website hosting provided hardly anyone visits it due to not being able to find it when searching via Google."
...is how I translate that. I dare say at times Google crawls add a bit of a load however I'm sure there are better ways to control the crawling than to ban the bot.

I see Search Engine bots crawling our website hosting all the time but the only load and memory usage we have on our server is due to our billing system and forum. both have big MySQL Server database so they give minor load but thats also less enough to be ignored. I have never seen bots making any problems on any of our servers.
You need to get your server replaced if it gets overloaded with googlebot.

Google is major source for webmasters, they pay their hosting fees from the amount they earn from google as traffic through redirect of visitors and other method, if particular hosting company is going to cut the main source of the clients for such ridiculous reason it is obvious that the clients must look for alternate option rather than continuing the service from a host provider that fail to upgrade their system. I presume few hosting company will start a special counter by offering these dreamhost clients a better deal and special offer to shift.

The load on your servers really will be completely relieved after doing this so there are right about that...... because no one will be able to find it!!

lol
I forgot that thing. If people dont visit website hostings of customers hosted on their servers then they wont have any load on the servers.
no visitors = no signups = no MySQL Server usage = no apache usage = no LOAD

Something is telling me they might reverse this advice. They seem to have shot themselves in the foot

how can we reach those who are not satisfied with them ?
They wont leave them as long as they don't prepare their mind to make a move. I've seen many people continuing with their existing hosts even if they don't get replies to their emails for weeks. Most of the times its only webmasters who are bothered about support and this group has been moving to VPS Hosting technology to get rid of support problems.
Support is important in VPS Hosting hosting as well but at least you have full root access on your VPS Hosting to get things sorted from someone somewhere to make your website hostings work as per your needs.
