Default Forwarding emails during nameserver update

Hi,
I will be migrating a client from ABCHOST to EUKHOST shortly.

I have access to the ABCHOST control panel. What I want to do is (when I update the nameservers to point to my EUK servers) forward his email from ABCHOST to his EUKHOST account. This way (goes my thinking) when my client's e-mail clients "fetch" hits my Dedicated Server he gets the emails which (a) came directly to my Dedicated Server AND (b) the emails which originally went to the ABCHOST server and were then forwarded by the method which I am asking about here.

I didn't think I'd be able to do this as (until ABCHOST's DNS lookup for the domain resolves to my IP address) there is no way to reference the email account on my EUK server. Unless I can forward to info@example.com@100.111.122.133 (if 100.111.122.133 is my VPS Hosting's IP), which I don't think I can do.

I hope this makes sense. I can't find any queries about this anywhere and it seems a fairly obvious issue.

I realise that I can forward all the email to a hotmail account and from there to the EUK server in 24 hours' time but I hope that there is a smoother way.

Thanks for reading,
Dave.

This is difficult to do... although what I suggest to do is have a parallel changeover.

Are you able to change the MX records on your old web host? If so, I suggest you change the MX records to the eUKhost MX records 24hours prior to migration. This way... all e-mails will automatically be sent to the eUKhost server.

OK, Thanks for that, Tom. I'll look into that and give it a try.

Hi Dave,

don't forward your emails to hotmail as hotmail has implemented some very strict rules which blocks forwarded emails. You can consider a gmail account as bi-directional forwarding is supported in Gmail.

best option is to consider Tom's suggestion. simply change MX records of your domain names and make them use our mail server.

The way I did it when I was changing servers was to change the MX to the new server and set the old server to not accept local mail. That might have only worked though as the same server was acting as the DNS.

Can you explain a bit more please?

Say my domain is dave.co.uk (ie, my VPS Hosting is VPS Hosting.dave.co.uk) and that I am going to be transferring james.co.uk from ABCHOST to EUKHOST (ie, host it on VPS Hosting.dave.co.uk) shortly.

If I go into the CPanel for james.co.uk on while they are still at ABCHOST, should I change the MX entry to dave.co.uk?

Also, what need I do to receive the james.co.uk email on my server? Assume I have already set james.co.uk up on CPanel.

When I change the nameservers (24 hours later) I can't see how the forwarded email will be in james.co.uk's email account as it was forwarded to dave.co.uk .

I'm sure this is quite simple but I think I'm missing something key.
Thanks,
Dave.

(having re-read JC's reply).... should I change the MX entry to VPS Hosting.dave.co.uk not dave.co.uk (as JC mentions servers rather than domains)?

Thanks again,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Don't change them to the VPS Hosting.dave.co.uk. I was just saying I moved a domain from a VPS Hosting to another VPS Hosting and changed the A records on the old server to point to the new server and also made sure that the old VPS Hosting wasn't accepting emails locally.

What Thomas has said should work. If you want more help, the support guys should be able to help you.

Hi Dave,

MX records can be setup on a domain or subdomain only. You cannot point MX records to IP address.

You will need to setup at least one domain on your new VPS Hosting and make it work from the new VPS Hosting. You can then proceed to change MX records of your domains on old VPS Hosting and make them use your new VPS Hosting for emails.

You may not feel comfortable with such technical thing so communicating on livechat with one of our support staff members will be helpful to get this sorted.
