If it happens again for you, I would say run a quick test from my monitoring site (it's completely free to do). It checks from multiple locations around the world to see if your server is accessible.

Not really as what I'm telling him to do it free! And it will help as each monitoring site can run a tracert if there is an issue!

I couldn't possibly put that link here as that would be classed as advertising! I was simply pointing out a free tool to help in the solution to the problem.
