Default Secondary Nameserver

Hi,

I am new to this Nameserver stuff and just need something confirming.

If I have a VPS Hosting with with EukHost and point a domains first Nameserver to this lets say its ns1.mydomain.co.uk then I point the secondary domain to another hosting provider like 1and1 (ns34.1and1.co.uk).

Would this mean that if my VPS Hosting went down, it would redirect to the secondary hosting at 1and1?

Thanks

It wouldn't necessarily 'redirect', but if your VPS Hosting went down, people would still be able to do NS lookups, and they would all be passed via the secondary name server.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

such solution is good for static website hostings but if first VPS Hosting went down and traffic is sent to the second account then the traffic wont return when the first VPS Hosting comes online.

you will need to manually take your second VPS Hosting offline to make the customers switch to first VPS Hosting.

Why to take this hassle. Ok what you say is right, visitors will move to second server if first one is down but what to do when first one Is up, manual conifg....?
I don't think its a good idea!

On our Business hosting servers we have both servers connected to each other with Internal LAN. If first server goes down for some reason then the second server will immediately bind IPs of first server and we will be notified about the problem. Everything will continue to work from the second server with 1 minute old backup and we will then need to troubleshoot problem on first server.

Once we manage to fix its problem then we will need to manually rsync latest data from second server to first server then then switch them again to make first server as master. Such solution wont be possible on VPS Hosting's as you cannot swap IPs of VPS Hosting's automatically and DNS switching time will be more than the actual downtime as you will be changing IPs in DNS.
