What would you look for first in a web hosting company?
Firstly, let me apologize for the long subject line. I tried to make it as short as possible.
Okay, say you are a pre-client and you were looking for Web hosting. What would you look for in a Web hosting company to get interested in buying? Mine would be...
- Professional Sales Support
- Affordable Packages
- Good Guaranteed Uptime
- 24/7 Support & Sales
And can I just note not many companies out there have all this without having a good catch like quite unreasonable uptime, no 24/7 support and sales, no telephone support, no live chat, etc. so my suggestion is; Regardless of bad experience with other Web hosting companies, some companies out there do actually care for their clients. So choose a Web hosting provider carefully.

I think support is probably support is near the top (if not top) of my list. It's no good having a great package if you can't get help when you need it. Support need to be relatively quick and helpful in attempting to resolve the problem. Probably the only way to find out how good support is is to ask existing customers, probably best on an independant website hosting, as some webhosts (not here I hasten to add) censor posts.
Uptime of the server and it's various resources is also important. It's no good having the server go down regularly or be down for many days. Similarly email or databases going down is just as inconveniant.
A reasonable hosting package perhaps with varying price packages to meet your needs is handy. A 'one size fits all' package can mean you're paying for much more than you're going to actually need (or want). I would say 'value of money' package however in some cases you get what you pay for, in that whilst the package might be cheap you get poor support as a result.

Well IMO 24x7 support and uptime guarantee is the most for hosting. Make it the first point Ben.

Two words. Excellent Support - there can be a compromise possibly on other things but this is essential and anywhere without excellent support is a big no no for me .

Not trying to be an ass kisser, but, everything that eUK has is what i want. They have to have voice support and a quick responding email support. Uptime is a must. Good cost to bw / space ratio too. eUK is cheap, but you get more than what you pay for. Ive been with a company and cheap meant just that, cheap.

There the worst type, the ones that entice you with cheap prices but are complete rubbish.
I think thats why some people are sceptical when they see the low prices here, but they couldn't be further from the truth.
I think this must be the only good priced and good serviced host I have seen that is based in the UK - it took me ages to find eUKhost I searched for about 2 months for a good priced service with the features I wanted, room for expansion and someone UK based.
It's normally either good / expensive or cheap / crap.

That trick made it easy for me to scrutinize my choice. Personally I would never choose a host based solely on price. Make sure you go with a web host that other people have had good experiences dealing with.

Thats why I am glad that there is stuff like the Customer Testimonials section on the forum so that prospective customers as well as current customers can hear about others experiences and see how they compare to their own.
I agree completely that you should never go with a host based solely on price but the value for money at eUKhost is a definite good bonus on top of the high quality hosting.

For me uptime is more important and the person you contact for support must have good knowledge and expertise in specific technical area to solve your problem if you come across in case.

I recently tried purchasing a VPS Hosting elsewhere, and I regret it so much and am very happy to come back to eUKHost.
But the host I was trying to move to had terrible support, it took them over one week to reply to a sales e-mail! - and I'm still waiting for the e-mail from them showing me they have refunded the money.
Anyway, in future, I now to look for a web hosting company with good support, 24/7 is also a priority for myself. I'm not to bothered too much about space and bandwidth allowances, as long as they are not too small.
To be honest, I think it's an art finding the right web host, and I believe eUKHost is exactly what I need, and I look forward to being with them over the next few years.

Taking a week to reply to a sales email!!!! God, normally even bad companies respond to them quickly so that you part with your money!

Well, I haven't gotten any paid hosting, but I can tell you what I'd look for. lol
1. 100% uptime...
2. Good Bandwidth
3. Good webspace
4. Affordable, and reasonable (no, 5 gb bandwidth for 50$ a month lol).
5. Good (easy to manage) cpanel, and;
6. ftp support.
That's about all I can think of now. lol

Yup, I still haven't received my refund e-mail back yet which I sent over 4 days ago. I'm going to name and shame this host to ensure no one goes with them, as customer and staff communication is terrible.
Do NOT go with WebFusion - unless you have broken services and very very very very slow support.
I'm with eUKHost from now on all the way

I remember someone who went with Seravge and within a month of joining he got his website hosting suspended for using 1000+ GB bandwidth. I couldn't believe it, so low priced its really no shock they suspend so many users.
Me too, I will stick with eUKhost because no other web host can provide services alike.

I used to be with Pipex / Webfusion. I never had any problem in getting my money back, you don't get an email confirming it, you have to call them. It normally works like this:
You Call Them To Cancel > They Email You a Contract You Have to Sign Confirming Cancellation > You Post it to Them via Snail Mail > Give It a Few Days and Call Them To Make Sure They Recieved It
Hope that helps...

Considering the amount of people that seem to be leaving them they might have made it a bit harder .
How long ago was that?

I've been with quite a few hosting companies and I've always come across the same problem with all of them. Lack of support/knowledge, downtime and database errors. I've done so many traceroutes I've lost count!
I moved to my current host about four weeks ago and I still experience database errors on a daily basis. What causes that, does anyone know?
