Default Age of Domain Name

I read somewhere that if you do not register a domain name for 3 years or so the search engine will assume that you have created a temporary website hosting for spamming and will rank it badly. I think it could be a new marketing tactics. Do you have same information or what you think about this?

I don't think the length of the domain registration period has got something to do with the site's Search Engine Optimization. Rather the age of domain would matter, that is how long the domain has been online. The age of a domain might give an appearance of site's longetivity to Google and better search engine rankings.

IMO as far as Search Engine Optimization is concern there is no need for you to register your domain for longer period.
It's not the age of domain name, it is the age of website hosting that matters which starts from the date when Google first indexed it.

IMO if you have read it somewhere it is a marketing gimmick and nothing else. The age of the domain does have some role to play in the Google's search engine algorithms. But that does not mean that you should register a domain name for a long period.
Most of the people think that by registering a domain name for a long duration indicates the search engine that the website hosting will stay online for a long term.

Harry, It's not only the age of the website hosting. It's the combination of two things that are considered in the age of a domain name and those are:

* Age of the website hosting, and
* The time-span a domain has been registered

The age of the web website hosting is built up of since how long the content is there on the web, how long the website hosting is in promotion, and even the latest updation of content.
The age of a domain is measured by not only the specific date the domain was registered, but it also counts how long it was registered for. As you know many domains register just for a year at a time, while many others are registered for long time - two-three or even five-ten years.

May be most of the people think that way but not any Search Engine ...

There is nothing such as getting penalized by the search engines if you don’t register your domain name for a stipulated time period as there are many webmasters who may not be practicing the same thing according to their preferences. It can be a marketing technique but one cannot say that unless it is proved by some genuine source.

Yea, going through all the posts here, I don't think there's any chance from getting bad effect from search engine, however it would to be good for one to register a domain name 2 years plus atleast. Thanks all of your suggestion!
