del.icio.us
del.icio.us- what made this domain name so popular, is that two (dot) working there? del.icio.us currently residing at delicious.com, it looks quite fancy domain, any idea what new technology they might be using to make the domain look like that and making it so popular?

Its a new idea - I am seeing quite a few domains like this popping up in places now - its quite an ingenious idea as most popular domains and all their variations are now registered.

del is a sub domain of icio.us (a '.us' domain) - that's all - nothing remarkable. It's the websites content and crucially its timing in the social networking boom of a couple of years ago that has made it so popular - it is this popularity that has made its domain name appear desirable and not the other way round.

Yes, but I still think its clever - and has started a copycat domain name trend of using a subdomain to complete a normal english word as the web address.
icio.us doesn't resolve to a website though interestingly enough.

Well, I think it is kind of domain hack by creating subdomain and changing URL pathname but anyway this can increase the value of subdomain name with utility and throughout web syndication if properly used, while on other hand it will make insignificant the original domain name. People were reluctant to use this earlier, however I think it can minimize the risk if you follow the idea like del, the clever idea I learnt from them that they had parked that page and later start marketing after getting tremendous popularity.

The del.icio.us domain is a notable example of a domain hack, an unconventional combination of letters to form a word or phrase. It is quite popular domain hack example although it's not the only domain name of this nature.
Having said that, del.icio.us has announced that they will no longer be known as "del.icio.us" but instead known as "delicious".

Well, I think that's another clever idea they adopted to gain good status for their original domain name throughout the popularity of del.icio.us that they already have.

I wish there should be a section for 18s only, like "underground" section or "Area 18"...likewise.

I've written a page to search for available del.icio.us style domain names where it shows dictionary words that end in TLDs. The best is probably .us because quite a few words end in 'us'.
The page is at domainnamesoup.com
