Default Domain Name alias problems

I have a Windows Reseller Hosting account that uses Plesk...

Ive just created a new website hosting for my band, we already have a domain name registered with 123 reg (theeyelashesthatatemanhattan.co.uk) and pointing to our old website hosting that is hosted on a different server.

So before creating our new website hosting I set a physical hosting account on my reseller account using a temporary domain name (a subdomain of my primary domain name - eyelashes.hostedwebdesign.co.uk).

Now our new website hosting is almost complete I updated the name servers at 123 reg with the eukhost dns details, I then added a domain alias to the "eyelashes.hostedwebdesign.co.uk" hosting account, setting it to "theeyelashesthatatemanhattan.co.uk".

After a few hours Ive noticed that when I enter "www.theeyelashesthatatemanhattan.co.uk" into my browser I get sent to our new website hosting, but when I dont enter the "www." prefix I still get sent to the old website hosting.

Is this just because Ive not waited long enough for the domain name to propagate through the net, or have I done something wrong?

(jeez that was hard to explain, I hope it makes sense to somebody!)

I dont see any difference with and without www. Seems like your cache has stored old website hosting without www. but you must have never checked old website hosting with www. so it shows new website hosting now.

Reboot your system or wait for some time.

That would make sense, but after much clearing of cache and a reboot, things are not any different.

Perhapse I should just wait a while, are there any settings in Plesk that could affect this?

Thats good to hear. DNS and cache problems are not so easy to understand and things cannot be predicted from other end.

Well there are no dns problems, things do work on other machines but my machine still wont play.

Any idea how I can totally clear my cache? I've tried clearing both my firefox and IE cache, cookies and offline content, but for some reason it still brings up the old website hosting when I try to access the domain without the www. prefix.

I had a slightly similar problem when I moved some website hostings here. If I pinged my domain, my EUKhost IP came up - but bizarrely, Internet Explorer still took me to my old host, no matter how much cache-clearing I did. In the end, I added an entry into my HOSTS file - that sorted it, and it stayed sorted even when I removed the entry.

Most of the times its not due to your local cache but its due to the cache on ISP's server. One of our ISP had similar problem but the other ISP who uses DSL technology keeps no cache.

this makes sense, im having the same problem with my newest domain name. been working on a website hosting for ages in work, now i cant access it at home.

i guess i shall just have to wait a while, i shouldnt be working at home anyhow!

I have the domain name set as a domain alias, do i just map it to my primary domain's ip in my hosts file or will that mess things up?

Dont do any changes through your control panel as the cache on your local ISP does not differentiate through IP address but the cache is stored for the domain name so it wont make any difference even if you change the IP or DNS settings regularly.

Its better to call them and ask them to reduce the cache time or check if you have some settings in your browser that is allowing cache to remain on your local system.

On my system Mozilla FireFox clears the cache once the browser is closed or if you refresh the page once again.

oh dont get me started on my isp, theres not much chance of getting them to do anything about it! i need to change but that involves a whole host of things that are completely off topic here.

firefox doesnt change even if I clear the cache and restart my pc. just gonna have to sit it out i suppose!

LOL.

ISPs are same for everyone and we all accept whatever service they offer. That business is really good as it makes no difference to them no matter if the customers are happy or not.

I think you will need to work through some proxies or VPN.

If you use some good proxies then it should show you updated changes immediately.

Proxies on DSL network should be preferred as that technology is much better when it comes to cache problems.

If you wish to wait till the ISP clears its cache then it can take close to 72 hours for that to happen.
