Would it make a difference for Search Engine Optimization to go for a .com instead of a .co.uk?

Yes indeed. If you are optimizing a website with a .com domain extension, it means you are targeting the US customers, which means most of the visitors would be from US. Whereas, a .co.uk domain extension would attract visitors from UK. Google displays the websites according to these extensions.

Can someone clear this up for me? I was always lead to believe that the .com tld was for companies and businesses worldwide, but somehow it became associated with America. A lot of large UK companies do in fact use .com when clearly aiming for the UK market (BT and the AA are two examples I can think of off the top of my head).

Thanks

Mark

.com domains are not limited for US websites, you can register a .com domain for UK Business website, but you will need to host your website within UK to get advantage in google.co.uk listings. Make sure you put your UK address in domain whois as google considers that as well.

eUKhost.com is hosted in UK and our whois information also shows our UK Address.

Thanks for clearing that up. As my domains are privately owned, I have opted out of displaying the whois details, does that mean my Search Engine Optimization will be affected?

Hi Mark,

Hiding whois information can create some problems for your search listing. I have read about domain whois information on many different websites and I have verified this on some of our websites.
