I'm trying to transfer a domain name (.com) from one registrar to another.

Is there a limit to what the current registrar can charge to give the EPP/Transfer code needed by the new registrar.

I ask I'm being asked for up to £50 by the current registrar. Surely they can't do this. They are just holding the domain name hostage.

The Domain transfer fees, depends upon the Domain registration provider, Most of the domain registrar do not charge for the EPP key/Transfer code. Eukhost also don't charge any fees to transfer away the domain name.

It is also important to check the Domain status, If the domain is expired than you will have to pay the extra fees to renew the domain name and than transfer it. Domains which are expired can't be transferred nor will receive the EPP key/Transfer code.

To transfer the .com domain name you will have to first renew the domain name with the current domain registrar and than transfer it to another registrar.

Domain isn't expired or anything - first time I've been asked such exorbitant sum for an EPP key

If the domain is registered under your ownership and you have paid for the domain registration fees. Than you can certainly contact ICANN and open a case against it. As per the guidelines of ICANN.

Domain registrar must not employ transfer processes as a mechanism to secure payment for services from a Registered Name Holder. Exceptions to this requirement are as follows:

(i) In the case of non-payment for previous registration period(s) if the transfer is requested after the expiration date, or

(ii) In the case of non-payment of the current registration period, if transfer is requested before the expiration date.

Let this be a lesson to every one. Check ALL the terms and conditions before selecting a registrar. Even if you get to transfer it without any further payment, how much has it cost in time, phone calls etc. to get it fixed.

Wow, that's not very nice to charge £50 for one EPP code..
