Wide expansion of TLDs
ICANN has made out some relaxation of the rules for the introduction of new Top-Level Domains that will enable company to register their brands as generic top-level domain names (TLDs). For example, Microsoft could apply to have a TLD such as '.msn', Apple apply for '.mac', and Google for '.goog'.. Read More; networkworld.com/news/2008/062608-board-opens-way-for-new.html

This would be an interesting and exciting development.
However I think it might cause a bit of virtual choas as loads of companies register loads of different TLDs and then not only do you have to remember a website hosting but also one of potentially millions of TLDs.
Think its a very double edged topic - good in some ways, very bad in others!

Now thats just silly lol
The one thing it will do is make domains like PayPal Labs / x.com -- PayPal's Showcase Web site hosting for Experimental Products - which are extremely valuable now, at lot less valuable.
As there will be x.msn, x.meow, x.shop, x.host, x.etc etc etc etc

I've heard ICANN has further come up with introducing .tel TLDs, which is going to bring up a new boom in the VoIP [Voice-over-IP] industry

Let the avalanche begin! .
I do have one question though, and I know this isn't very common but it still happens. If a new country is formed / or a country splits (such as the Soviet Union, Czechoslavakia, Serbia + Montenegro etc), what happens if a company has already registered the TLD that would be given to that country.
For example, if .msn was registered by Microsoft, and a new country formed years later, would be assigned this TLD had it not been taken, would Microsoft have the TLD taken off them or would the country have to have a TLD that doesn't really relate to them?

In such case, I think ICANN will take care to announce a country specific TLD that doesn't really relate to the branded tld which is already assigned to some one. I heard such tld will cost $50,000 to register, I don't think a small business owner could be interested to pay that much amount to register a generic tld of their own brand.
