Default Hello from Bob M

Hi Just signed up for a small account as I want to create a wiki for English teachers.

The boys at UK host have been most helpful, but I'm still struggling with a few things so I'll keep plugging away.

This forum seems a very friendly place so I expect I'll be around for a while - though I imagine that I'm going to be asking for help and advice rather than giving it!

Cheers Brian. Could you (or anybody else) clarify something for me. What are the limits to eUK help and when should one talk to the forums?

I had imagined that the eUK help would be limited to just technical things associated with the hosting arrangements. But last night I was pleasantly surprised when they helped me set up the Wiki - which, strictly speaking, I would ahve thought was an external application. So, how far can I abuse their helpfulness? At the moment I want to get back into the wiki to add some extensions but can't see how to do it. Should I grovel for help here or simply chat to the kind tech guys again?

I think oficially their support stops at techical issues with the server etc but I have found if they can help in any way they will, like they did for you.

Hey Bob!
Welcome to the forums!

The support people are usually more than willing to help with some program issues e.g. installs and helping resolving those which are caused by server settings. If you do have some other questions, we're always here to help on the forums!

Hope you enjoy your time here.

OK. This is my problem. I've got mediawiki set up and now I want to install some extensions and create three new namespaces. I'm OK at editing wiki's but I find that I know I know almost nothing about the back end stuff.

When I go to control panel I find a lot of options but I'm don't know where to go from there. There are instructions on the web about inserting particular code in particular places - but I can't seem to find any appropriate place to stick it. (So to speak)

I've been playing around with PHP MY Admin in control panel - but noting looks appropriate. If I were a woman, I would offer to have the babies of anyone who could shed some light on this,

I have a feeling Bob this may be a case of uploading things with FTP into folders. Don't quote me on that though as I've never used that program. Is there not a tutorial or something on their site?

First of all thanks for the various welcomes. Most appreciated.

Oh yes, there is a description of which folders to put them in and even where to put them within the folder - before this and after that. But I can't seem to find the folders. Reading the text I feel that I should be seeing a page of code (or various pages of code) and I should be carefully inserting different bits of text.

But I can't seem to bring those pages up. Which is slightly frustrating.

This is probably the wrong area to raise this, I look for a more appropriate part of the forum.
