We want to install and use Aide (for its obvious benefits when needed) but it needs mhash earliest version 0.9.2 (0.9.8.1 being the current version) - I see in WHM's Apache update (easyapache) that the install includes mhash 0.8.18, my questions are ...

How is it that cPanel do not use the latest version of mhash? Would manually updating mhash break the apache update in WHM (I've seen issues arise from updating modules outside of the apache update on cPanel's forum)?

Hey,

If you upgrade Mhash to 0.9.2 manually, then it will not work with existing PHP modules. Even, if you upgrade the PHP using easyapache then also the Mhash version will be same.
So, it's really not possible to upgrade Mhash unless and until cPanel provides it.

Thanks Shane, you confirmed my worst fears

I'll go look into what cPanel have to say about the version of mhash, and perhaps we'll have to make do with tripwire instead.
